Titans Split with Pioneers

IWU moves to 16-13 overall, 11-10 in the CCIW

WAUKESHA, Wis. - The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team split a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin doubleheader at Carroll University Thursday afternoon, April 22. After a comeback bid fell short, 5-3, in game one, the Titans blew out the Pioneers 15-3 in game two.

Illinois Wesleyan moved to 16-13 overall, 11-10 in league games, while Carroll's record went to 14-13 on the year and 8-11 in the CCIW.

Game One: Illinois Wesleyan 3, Carroll 5
Junior Dominic DiLello (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred-Heart Griffin) and Dan Cerniglia (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South) combined for four of IWU's eight hits in game one. DiLello finished the game 2-for-4 with a home run, while Cerniglia went 2-for-3 with a RBI.

On the mound, senior Eric Bennes (Palatine, Ill.-Fremd) and freshman Garrett Swingler (Normal, Ill.-Normal West). Bennes started the game, while Swingler tossed three scoreless innings in relief.

Illinois Wesleyan could not overcome an early deficit in the series opener as the Pioneers scored three in the first and added two in the third to take a 5-0 lead.

DiLello belted a solo homer in the fourth, and IWU added two more in the sixth, but the Titans' comeback fell short, 5-3.

Game Two: Illinois Wesleyan 15, Carroll 3
Four Titans cranked out multiple hits as IWU finished with 13 in a game two victory. Cerniglia went 3-for-5, while DiLello, Cole Greer (Springfield, Ill.-Pleasant Plains), and Evan Ranneklev (Naperville, Ill.-Neuqua Valley) added two hits apiece. DiLello drove in a game-high four, with Greer and Ranneklev each scored three times. 

Senior Joe Prestamer (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East), sophomore Scott Monocchio (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard West), and senior Cooper Kraft (Morton, Ill.-Morton) combined to throw five innings, while Evan Hill (Gurnee, Ill.-Warren Township) threw four. Prestamer struck out four over three scoreless innings, giving up just one hit, while Monocchio and Kraft tossed 1-2-3 innings and struck out one each.

Carroll and Illinois Wesleyan played to a 3-3 tie into the fifth inning, where IWU took the lead and never looked back. A sacrifice fly put the Green and White up 4-3 and a RBI single by DiLello upped IWU's lead to two, 5-3, through four and a half.

The Titans piled on four runs on four hits and an error in the sixth. Cerniglia got things going with a leadoff double, and Greer was beamed to put two on. Jared Mutter's (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) sac fly brought home one, and freshmen Jacob Cyrus (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard South) and Will Kafer (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal West) followed with RBI knocks to up the lead to 8-3. Fellow freshman Dino Biggers (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville Central) capped the inning with a run-scoring single to center to make it 9-3.

After adding another run in the eight, IWU tacked on five more in the ninth to run away victorious, 15-13.

Illinois Wesleyan takes a break from competition for final exams before returning to action at Elmhurst University, April 28, for a 5 p.m. first pitch.
