Titans Take Game Two in Doubleheader with WashU

Titans move to 7-7 on the season

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University softball team took a break from College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play with a non-conference doubleheader against Washington University in St. Louis Friday, April 2. The Titans came up short, 7-5, in game one, but secured the split with a 4-3 game-two victory at Inspiration Field.

Illinois Wesleyan bumped its record to 7-7 on the season, while WashU moved to 8-7.

Game One: WashU 7, Illinois Wesleyan 5
Junior Colleen Palczynski (Mt. Prospect, Ill.-Prospect) led the Titans offensively, going 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs and a homerun. Senior Lexy Trammell (Peoria, Ill.-Limestone) went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and a walk as IWU was outhit 8-7 by WashU.

Illinois Wesleyan used a trio of arms in game one, with sophomore Nina Mardjetko (Lemont, Ill.-Lemont) starting the game and ultimately suffering the loss. Mardjetko tossed the first three innings, striking out two. Junior Madie Monk (Manteno, Ill.-Manteno) tossed 2.1 innings, while freshman Bailey Turner (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) threw the final 1.2.

The Bears used two big innings to top the Titans, 7-5, in game one.

A RBI single off the bat of sophomore Erica Barker (Linton, Ind.-Linton-Stockton) put IWU up 1-0 into the third, but WashU plated four runs to claim a 4-1 lead.

The Titans responded with a three-run fourth. Palczysnki belted one to the moon for her team-leading fourth homer of the season. Trammell followed with a walk and moved to third on Turner's single to put runners on the corners for senior Toni Tortorella (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South). After a RBI groundout pulled the Titans within one, freshman Kristina Sherwin (Plainfield, Ill.-St. Francis) ripped a 2-0 offering to left field to even the score at 4-4.

IWU capitalized on a leadoff walk in the fifth, scoring freshman Megan Fontanetta (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) on Palczysnki's rip to center to go up 5-4. The Titans did not lead for long as the Bears used a bases loaded triple to take game one, 7-5.

Game Two: WashU 3, Illinois Wesleyan 4
Both teams finished with four hits apiece, with senior Hannah Heraty (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville) fueling IWU with a 3-for-3 effort with two RBIs and a run scored. Sophomore Madison Moore (Verona, Wis.-Edgewood) tallied IWU's other base knock, a RBI double.

Mardjetko, who entered in relief, tossed 4.2 scoreless innings. She struck out four en route to the win.

A pair of doubles off the bats of Heraty and Moore gave Illinois Wesleyan a 2-0 advantage after two innings.

After WashU sprung for three runs on one hit and three errors in the top of the third, IWU reclaimed the lead in the bottom half of the frame.

Junior Hayley Earl (Washington, Ill.-Washington) and Palczynski led off the Titans' half of the third with back-to-back walks, forcing the Bears to make a pitching change. A beautifully executed sacrifice bunt from junior Kaylee Bowers (Champaign, Ill.-Champaign Central) moved runners to second and third with one out for Heraty. The senior outfielder singled through the right side to bring home two and put IWU on top, 4-3.

Mardjetko took it from there, as a double play wrapped up the seventh and finished off the IWU victory.
