Earl's Walk-Off Hit Secures Softball Series Win at Carroll

Earl doubled to walk-off with 5-4 win in 10 innings in finale

WAUKESHA, Wis. - Junior Hayley Earl's (Washington, Ill.-Washington) walk-off RBI double secured a split for the Illinois Wesleyan University softball team at Carroll University Sunday, April 18. The Pioneers (15-13, 11-9 CCIW) took game one 4-1, but Earl's walk-off double lifted the Titans (17-9, 14-6 CCIW) to a 5-4 10-inning win in game two.

Game One: Illinois Wesleyan 1, Carroll 4
Sophomore Madison Moore (Verona, Wis.-Edgewood) extended her hit streak to seven games with a 2-for-3 performance as the Titans finished with five hits.

In the circle, sophomore Natalie Grubczak (Medinah, Ill.-Lake Park) and Nina Mardjetko (Lemont, Ill.-Lemont) got work in. Grubczak started the game and struck out two, while Mardjetko held the Pioneers to one hit over the final 2.1 innings and fanned a pair.

Trailing 4-0 into the fifth, broke up Carroll's no-hit bid on Moore's one-out single. Senior Hannah Heraty (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville) followed with a single to left, and fellow senior Toni Tortorella (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South) was plunked, loading the bases. A wild pitch allowed Moore to score moments later, cut the Pioneer lead to 4-1.

The Titans threatened again in the seventh, loading the bases with two outs, but the rally fell short, 4-1.

Game Two: Carroll 4, Illinois Wesleyan 5 (10 inn.)
The long ball powered the Titans to a 3-0 lead just two innings in as junior Colleen Palczynski (Mt. Prospect, Ill.-Prospect) smacked a two-run homer in the first and Heraty added a solo shot in the second.

Palczynski picked up another RBI in the third, scoring freshman Megan Fontanetta (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) on a RBI groundout to up the lead to 4-0.

IWU's 4-0 edge held until the seventh, where Carroll tied the game with four runs on six hits. With runners on the corners and two outs, Grubczak entered in relief and escaped the jam with a groundout.

In the ninth, Moore reached with a bunt single with one out and moved into scoring position on Fontanetta's sacrifice. Then, with two outs, Earl roped a double to left to bring Moore home and lift IWU to a 5-4 walk-off win.

The Titans racked up 11 hits in the series finale, with Earl leading the way with a 3-for-4 showing. Moore went 2-for-5 with two runs scored, and Heraty added a 2-for-4 effort.

In the circle, IWU used three hurlers to grind out the win. Mardjetko got the start, tossed the first 6.1 innings, and then handed it to junior Madie Monk (Manteno, Ill.-Manteno) and Grubczak for the rest of the seventh. Mardjetko returned for the eighth and ninth innings, finishing with four strikeouts over 8.1 innings of work, and picked up her sixth win of the season.

A four-game homestand is next on the docket for Illinois Wesleyan, as the Titans welcome Augustana College for two games Wednesday, April 21, with a 4 p.m. first pitch.
