Long Ball Lifts Titans Over Augie

IWU ups its record to 19-9 overall, 16-6 in the CCIW

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University softball team powered past Augustana College 5-4 and 6-1 in a doubleheader at Inspiration Field Wednesday night, April 21. A walk-off homer gave IWU a 5-4 win in nine innings in the opener, before the Titans used the long ball to take down the Vikings 6-1 in the series finale.

With the wins, Illinois Wesleyan jumped to 19-9 overall and 16-6 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. Augustana dropped to 6-20 and 3-15 in the CCIW.

Game One: Augustana 4, Illinois Wesleyan 5 (9 inn.)
Illinois Wesleyan registered seven hits in the opener, with freshman Kristina Sherwin (Plainfield, Ill.-St. Francis) leading the way. Sherwin, who hit the first homer of her career to walk-off with the win, went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

In the circle, sophomore Natalie Grubczak (Medinah, Ill.-Lake Park) threw 5.1 scoreless innings in relief. With the win, she moved to 8-3 on the year, while striking out eight and scattering five hits.

Augustana's bats were hot early, as the Vikings jumped out to a 4-0 lead through three and a half innings of play.

Illinois Wesleyan manufactured four runs on four hits in its half of the fourth. Junior Hayley Earl (Washington, Ill.-Washington) led things off with a double that split the right-center gap, and came home on a two-run double off the bat of senior Hannah Heraty (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville). Sherwin followed with a two-bagger of her own, trading places with Heraty, to pull IWU within one, 4-3. Senior Toni Tortorella (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South) evened the score with a RBI single up the middle.

Augie put two aboard in the eighth and ninth innings, but Grubczak and the Titans held steady to keep the game knotted at four into IWU's half of the ninth.

With one out, Sherwin lifted the 1-1 offering over the left field fence to propel the Titans to a 5-4 walk-off win.

Game Two: Illinois Wesleyan 6, Augustana 1
Sherwin and senior Lexy Trammell (Peoria, Ill.-Limestone) each went 2-for-3 in the nightcap, as IWU tallied seven hits. Sherwin added two runs scored and a RBI, while Trammell drove in three.

Freshman Bailey Turner (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) threw a complete game, the first of her career, and picked up her second win of the season. She struck out six and allowed one run on seven hits.

After plating the game's first run on a RBI groundout in the second, the Titans added to their cushion in the fifth and sixth innings.

Trammell's two-run homer put IWU up 3-0 through five, before junior Colleen Palczynski (Mt. Prospect, Ill.-Prospect) belted her 11th round-tripper of the year to increase the lead to 4-0 in the sixth.

Tortorella picked up a RBI and Trammell tacked on another via a single to push Illinois Wesleyan's advantage to 6-0.

Augustana scraped one across in the sixth to break the shutout, but could not muster much more as Turner closed out the win.

Illinois Wesleyan returns to action Sunday, April 25, when the Titans trek to Chicago for a twin bill against North Park University.
