Baseball Falls Short in Weekend Finale at Augie

Titans swept doubleheader Saturday, lead season series 2-1

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - A late inning rally fell short as the Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team saw its win streak snapped at four with a 6-4 setback at Augustana College Sunday afternoon, April 18.

The Titans (15-12, 10-9 CCIW) battled back from an early deficit to tie the game at two into the sixth, but the Vikings sprung for four runs over the next two frames to take a 6-2 lead. After scoring a run in the eighth, IWU brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the ninth. Junior Jared Mutter (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) singled and senior Dominic DiLello (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart Griffin) was hit by a pitch, before freshman Will Kafer's (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal West) RBI single pulled Illinois Wesleyan within two, 6-4. With the winning run at the plate, a fly out thwarted the rally and sent IWU home with a 6-4 setback.

Illinois Wesleyan collected 14 hits on the day, its 17th double-digit hit game of the season. Mutter led the way with a 4-for-5 showing, while Kafer and junior Dan Cerniglia (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South) went 3-for-4. Rounding out the multi-hit performances was junior Evan Ranneklev (Naperville, Ill.-Neuqua Valley) who finished 2-for-5.

On the mound, seniors Dan Trudeau (Mokena, Ill.-Mount Carmel), Nick Watson (Normal, Ill.-Normal West), and Jacob Duffy (Pontiac, Ill.-Pontiac) split up the innings. Trudeau got the start and struck out two over 2.2 innings, while Watson fanned two in 3.1 innings of work and was the pitcher of record. Duffy closed out the game, tossing the final two frames.

Illinois Wesleyan is set to face off against Carroll University later this week.
