Baseball Rallies for Sweep of Augie

Titans and Vikings meet tomorrow, April 18, in Rock Island, Ill.

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team rallied for a doubleheader sweep of Augustana College Saturday, April 17, at Horenberger Field. The Titans (15-11, 10-8 CCIW) upended the Vikings (18-5, 10-5 CCIW) with 9-4 and 9-6 wins.

Game One: Augustana 4, Illinois Wesleyan 9
The Titans scored a combined six runs in the sixth and seventh innings to upend the Vikings, 9-4 in game one.

IWU cranked out 11 hits in the game, while Augie tallied 10 but was plagued by three errors. Senior Dan Cerniglia (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South) and juniors Evan Ranneklev (Naperville, Ill.-Neuqua Valley) and Jared Mutter (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) each tallied multi-hit games. Cerniglia went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored, while Ranneklev and Mutter added two hits each. Ranneklev also added a pair of RBIs and two runs scored, with Mutter driving in one and scoring once.

Senior Hunter Simon (Verona, Ill.-Seneca) got the start and tossed the first eight innings, striking out four. Senior Cooper Kraft (Morton, Ill.-Morton) threw a scoreless ninth, striking out one, in relief.

Augie scored the game's first four runs, but a three-run third pulled IWU within one into the fourth. A two-run triple off the bat of Ranneklev and a RBI groundout from Mutter pulled the Titans within one, 4-3.

The Green and White took its first lead of the day, 5-4, on a two-run single down the right field line off the bat of Cerniglia in the sixth, before piling on a few insurance runs in the seventh.

Ranneklev sparked the four-run seventh with a leadoff single up the middle. Mutter followed with a single of his own, and an error on a sacrifice bunt attempt put runners on second and third. WIth two outs, Burgh ripped a single to right, bringing home two, and Cerniglia finished it off with a RBI single to put the score at 9-4 in favor of the Titans.

Simon tossed a 1-2-3 eighth, and Kraft worked around a one-out walk in the ninth to preserve the 9-4 win.

Game Two: Augustana 6, Illinois Wesleyan 9
Illinois Wesleyan rallied for a 9-6 win in the nightcap to complete the doubleheader sweep. Ranneklev, Mutter, and junior Collin Elvers (Hamel, Ill.-Edwardsville) registered two hits each, with Ranneklev adding three RBIs.

Seniors Colin Pfotenhauer (Lemont, Ill.-Marist), Joe Prestamer (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East), and Kraft locked down the win in relief, tossing the final five innings.

Augustana entered the fourth inning with a 5-3 advantage, before the Titans took the lead with three runs in the fourth. Ranneklev started the three-run inning with a two-run double, and Mutter followed with a RBI single through the left side.

Leading 6-5, Illinois Wesleyan added a run on Elvers' RBI single in the fifth.

Augie pulled within one in the sixth, but Dominic DiLello's (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart Griffin) bunt single and freshman Jacob Cyrus' (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard South) sac fly upped the IWU lead to 9-6.

Kraft threw a 1-2-3 ninth to close out the doubleheader sweep with a 9-6 win.
