Hot Bats Fuel Titans to Sweep of Thunder

IWU combined for 29 hits and 19 runs in doubleheader

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team swept a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin doubleheader against Wheaton College Wednesday, April 14, at Horenberger Field. The Titans topped the Thunder 8-2 in game one, and walked off with an 11-10 win in the night cap to improve to 13-11 overall and 8-8 in CCIW play. Wheaton stumbled to 6-16 on the year and 4-12 in league games.

Game One: Wheaton 2, Illinois Wesleyan 8
Freshman Will Kafer (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal West) went a perfect 3-for-3 in the game, adding a RBI and a run scored, while senior Dominic DiLello (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart Griffin) and junior Evan Ranneklev (Naperville, Ill.-Neuqua Valley) added three hits apiece. Junior Cole Greer (Springfield, Ill.-Pleasant Plains) finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and senior Collin Elvers (Hamel, Ill.-Edwardsville) belted a three-run homer in a 1-for-3 showing.

Senior Eric Bennes (Palatine, Ill.-Fremd) turned in a quality start, throwing the first six innings on his way to his second win of the season. He scattered six hits and allowed two runs, one earned, while striking out four. Colin Pfotenhauer (Lemont, Ill.-Marist) tossed the final inning, striking out one, to finish off the win.

Wheaton took an early 1-0 lead on a RBI single in the top of the first, but Jared Mutter's (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) ground ball scored one and Kafer added another on a RBI double to put the Titans on top 2-1 into the second.

After Greer upped the IWU lead to 3-1 with a run-scoring single, Elvers cranked a three-run homer to put Illinois Wesleyan up by five, 6-1.

In the fourth, Greer was plunked to lead off the inning. He scooted into second on a wild pitch and then came around to score on Ranneklev's single through the left side, increasing the IWU cushion to 7-1.

Wheaton cut the lead to five with a run in the fifth, but DiLello's RBI double put the final tally at 8-2 in favor of IWU.

Game Two: Wheaton 10, Illinois Wesleyan 11 (10 inn.)
Illinois Wesleyan cranked out 15 hits in the nightcap, led by a 4-for-5 game from Greer. Along with his four hits, he scored four times, drove in two, and walked. Ranneklev tallied three hits, while Mutter and freshman Jacob Cyrus (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard South) finished two hits each. Greer, Mutter, and DiLello tied for the team lead with two RBIs apiece.

Senior Jacob Duffy (Pontiac, Ill.-Pontiac) earned the win after tossing a hitless ninth inning, striking out one.

The Titans saw a 6-3 lead turned into a 9-6 deficit after a six-run sixth by the Thunder.

Illinois Wesleyan evened the score at nine all on a wild pitch and RBI base knocks from Mutter and Ranneklev to tie the score into the eighth.

A single through the left side gave Wheaton a 10-9 lead into the ninth, where Illinois  Wesleyan walked off 11-10 victors. With two on and one out, Mutter ripped a single through the left side to level the score at 10. After a wild pitch put runners on second and third, DiLello drove a deep fly ball to left to score the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly.

The Titans remain at home for a twin bill against Augustana College Saturday, April 17, at Horenberger Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
