Baseball Falls to Firebirds in Series Finale

Titans open four-game homestand versus Wheaton Wednesday

KENOSHA, Wis. - The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team dropped its series finale at Carthage College by a score of 6-3 Monday afternoon, April 12. The Titans sit at 11-11 overall following the setback, and are 6-8 in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play.

The Titans cranked out 11 hits in the game to the Firebirds' nine. Junior Cole Greer (Springfield, Ill.-Pleasant Plains), Jared Mutter (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East), Dominic DiLello (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart Griffin), and freshman Jacob Cyrus (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard South) tallied two hits each, while junior Evan Ranneklev (Naperville, Ill.-Neuqua Valley) and freshman Evan Hutson (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) recorded one RBI apiece.

Illinois Wesleyan used six arms on the mound, with senior Dan Trudeau (Mokena, Ill.-Mount Carmel) getting the start. Colin Pfotenhauer (Lemont, Ill.-Marist) tossed a 1-2-3 seventh and Jacob Duffy (Pontiac, Ill.-Pontiac) threw a scoreless eighth.

The Green and White took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, as freshman Will Kafer (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal West) led the frame off with a single. An error put runners on the corners with nobody out and set the table for Hutson's RBI single to center.

The Firebirds answered with a four-run third, scoring on two hits and an error to take a 4-1 lead after three.

Carthage carried a 5-1 lead into the sixth, where Ranneklev drove in a run, but the Firebirds responded with a run-scoring single to boost their lead to 6-2.

IWU plated one more in the seventh, but could not overcome the deficit in a 6-3 setback.

Illinois Wesleyan returns to action at home Wednesday, April 14, for a doubleheader with Wheaton College. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Horenberger Field.
