Baseball Stumbles at No. 7 WashU

Titans and Bears close out the series tomorrow, March 7

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team suffered its first losses of the season Saturday, March 6, in a doubleheader sweep at the hands of seventh-ranked Washington University in St. Louis. IWU dropped game one 5-1 and saw game two slip away, 10-5. The Titans fell to 3-2 on the season with the losses, while the Bears moved to 2-0.

Game One: Illinois Wesleyan 1, WashU 5
Illinois Wesleyan outhit WashU 8-6 in game one of the double dip, but four errors plagued the Titans in the loss. Junior Evan Ranneklev (Naperville, Ill.-Neuqua Valley) was a bright spot for the Titans offensively, going 3-for-4 with one run driven in. IWU's other four hits were spread evenly among Cole Greer (Springfield, Ill.-Pleasant Plains), freshman Jacob Cyrus (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard South), Jared Mutter (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East), Ethan Burgh (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Prospect), and Will Kafer (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal West). Greer also added a run scored and a walk, while Mutter and Burgh also earned free passes.

On the mound, senior Quinn Gudaitis (Arlington Heights, Ill.-John Hersey) went seven innings, striking out eight. In relief, fellow senior Nick Watson (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) pitched a scoreless eighth.

WashU struck for a run in the second, two in the third, and one in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead into the sixth.

Illinois Wesleyan broke the shutout in the top of sixth, as Ranneklev tripled to center to score Greer, cutting the WashU lead to three, 4-1.

That was all the run production the Titans could muster, as IWU stranded three over the final three innings as the Bears took the game, 5-1.

Game Two: Illinois Wesleyan 5, WashU 10
WashU got out to a 4-0 lead, but IWU evened the score with a four-run sixth. DiLello got things going with a single, and Greer walked to put two on for Ranneklev. The hot-hitting junior singled two score two and later came around to score on an error. With IWU trailing 4-3, Cyrus singled to left field to put runners on the corners for Burgh. He laced a double to center to tie the game at four all and force the Bears to make a pitching change.

Illinois Wesleyan ran out of a steam as a strikeout and ground out ended the threat and stranded two.

The Titans loaded the bases in the seventh, but came up empty. The Bears then reclaimed the lead with a RBI single in the bottom half of the frame.

WashU broke the game open in the eighth, scoring five runs on five hits and an error.

IWU plated a run on two hits in its final turn at bat, but it was not enough to overtake WashU.

The Titans and Bears close out the series tomorrow, March 7, with a 12 p.m. first pitch.
