Baseball Bested by Bears in Series Finale

Kafer hits solo home run in 1-for-2 effort

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team fell 9-1 in the series finale with Washington University in St. Louis Sunday, March 7. The loss drops the Titans' record to 3-3, while the seventh-ranked Bears upped their record to 3-0.

Freshman Will Kafer (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal West) and Dino Biggers (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville Central) accounted for IWU's two hits in the contest. Kafer finished the day 1-for-2 with a homerun and a walk, while Biggers' finished 1-for-5 with a double.

Senior Eric Bennes (Palatine, Ill.-Fremd), who got the start and was the pitcher of record, struck out three over four innings on the mound.

WashU used a homerun to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but Kafer's solo shot in the third evened the score.

The Bears plated four runs on five hits in their half of the third. Back-to-back two-run knocks  pushed WashU's lead to 5-1 through three.

After the Bears tacked on another run in the fourth, IWU threatened in the fifth as Kafer drew a two-out walk. Dominic DiLello (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart Griffin) followed with a free pass, and Ethan Burgh (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Prospect) loaded the bases with a third straight walk, but a strikeout ended the inning and stranded three.

WashU bumped its lead to eight with a pair of runs in the sixth and another in the eighth to down Illinois Wesleyan, 9-1.

IWU returns to action next weekend, March 13-14, for a three-game series with Wartburg College. The non-conference set begins with a doubleheader Saturday, March 13, with a 2 p.m. first pitch. The series comes to a close Sunday, March 14, with a 12 p.m. start.
