Softball Splits with Millikin

Titans dropped game one 7-6, won game two 2-1

DECATUR, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University softball team split a doubleheader at Millikin University Wednesday evening, March 31. The Titans (6-6, 4-4 CCIW) fell 7-6 in game one, but bounced back to top the Big Blue (10-6, 7-3 CCIW) 2-1 in game two.

Game One: Illinois Wesleyan 6, Millikin 7
Junior Hayley Earl (Washington, Ill.-Washington) and senior Lexy Trammell (Peoria, Ill.-Limestone) notched two hits apiece. Earl went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, a triple, and a double, while Trammell finished the game 2-for-2 with a walk and one run driven in.

Junior Madie Monk (Manteno, Ill.-Manteno) started the game and went the first four innings, while sophomore Nina Mardjetko (Lemont, Ill.-Lemont) threw the final two frames as each pitcher finished with two strikeouts.

Trammell's RBI triple put the Titans on top 1-0 in the second, but the Big Blue used a RBI groundout to even the score at one into the third inning.

Sophomore Madison Moore (Verona, Wis.-Edgewood) singled with one out in the top of the third. Freshman Megan Fontanetta (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) followed with a base knock to put two on for Earl. The junior catcher ripped a double to left center, scoring two and giving IWU a 3-1 lead.

Millikin cut the Illinois Wesleyan lead to one in the bottom half of the third. The Big Blue then plated three runs on five hits in the fourth to take a 5-3 lead. One run in the fifth put the Titans' deficit at 6-3 into the sixth. Each team tacked on a run in the sixth to put the Green and White behind 7-4 into its final at bats.

Earl got things going in the seventh with a leadoff double. An error and a wild pitch put runners on second and third with no outs. After a pair of strikeouts, Trammell walked to load the bases and bring the winning run to the plate.

Senior Toni Tortorella (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South) singled to bring in one, and freshman Kristina Sherwin (Plainfield, Ill.-St. Francis) walked to pull the Titans within one, 7-6. IWU ran out of steam though as a strikeout ended Illinois Wesleyan's comeback hopes.

Game Two: Millikin 1, Illinois Wesleyan 2
Illinois Wesleyan finished with six hits to Millikin's three in game two. The freshman duo of Fontanetta and Sherwin tallied two each, while Trammell and junior Colleen Palczynski (Mt. Prospect, Ill.-Prospect) added one RBI apiece.

Sophomore Natalie Grubczak (Medinah, Ill.-Lake Park) pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts, holding Millikin to one run on three hits.

Moore led off the bottom of the first with a walk and moved to second on Fontanetta's sacrifice bunt. Palczynski singled with two outs to score Moore and give IWU an early 1-0 edge.

Illinois Wesleyan maintained its lead into the fourth, but a leadoff walk scored for the Big Blue to even the score at 1-1.

Sherwin and Fontanetta singled in IWU's half of the fifth to get things going, before a bases loaded walk by Trammell put the Titans back on top, 2-1.

Grubczak worked around a leadoff walk in the sixth. A sacrifice bunt put the tying run in scoring position, but Grubczak bounced back with back-to-back strikeouts to send the game to the bottom of the sixth.

In the top of the seventh, the Big Blue got the tying run to third with two away, but Grubczak got a game-ending groundout to seal the 2-1 win.

Illinois Wesleyan returns home this weekend, April 2-3, for doubleheaders against WashU and North Park. The Titans square off with WashU Friday, April 2, beginning at 2 p.m. and close out the weekend against NPU Saturday, April 3, with a 12 p.m. first pitch.
