Titans improve to 5-1

CINCINNATI, Ohio. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team came out on top with a 21-18 victory over Southern Virginia University Saturday, March 27.  The Titans move to 5-1 as they head into conference play next week.

The Titans were led by sophomore Connor Kiichle (Vancouver, Wash.-Skyview), junior Charles Hildestad (Carlock, Ill.-St. Viator), and sophomore Jaxon Henderickson (British Columbia-Westtown) who each tallied four points. Connor Kiichle and Henderickson registered two goals and two assists a piece, while Hildestad net four goals for the Green and White.

Junior Austin Masters (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.-Stevenson) and senior Jory Vance (Milwaukee, Wis.-Wauwatosa East) tied with the team-high three caused turnovers. Master also collected a goal and three ground balls. The Titans also dominated at the faceoff X where they went 36-for-42.

Senior Will Harris (Bloomington, Minn.-Holy Angels) split time with junior Thomas Laduzinsky (Geneva, Ill.-Wheaton Academy) who made his season debut. Harris started for the Titans totaling nine saves in the first two periods. Laduzinsky grabbed 11 stops over the final 30.

Freshman Gage Black (Peoria, Ill,-Dunlap) put the Titans up by four, 10-6 with eight minutes to go in the opening half. The Knights managed to tie up the game at 10 before junior Daniel Dickerson (Wheaton, Ill.-St. Francis College Prep) picked up the ground ball off the faceoff and put it behind the Knights goalkeeper, ending the half 11-10 in favor of IWU.

A shaky start allowed the Knights to take their first lead of the game in the third quarter. SVU scored the first three goals of the half to take a 13-11 lead.

Illinois Wesleyan rallied back as junior Zac Taylor (Brighton, Mich.-Brighton) put up a big goal off his own face off win to tie the game at 14.

The Titans and Knights exchanged goals before Hildestad widen the Titan lead to 19-17 on a pass from Carson Kiichle (Vancouver, Wash.-Skyview) forcing SVU to take a timeout. The Green and White secured the win by adding two more goals, ending the game 21-18.

The Titans head into conference play next week to face Augustana College Thursday, April 1 in Rock Island, Ill. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
