Football Shuts Out Augie for CCIW Victory

Titans shutout Vikings for first time since 2009

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University football team shutout Augustana College at the Knowlton Athletic Complex Saturday afternoon, March 27. IWU defeated Augie 12-0 in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play to move to 1-1 on the season. The shutout marked IWU's first against AC since 2009.

Junior Robert Neidballa (Winfield, Ill.-Wheaton North) led the Titans with 10 tackles, including one for loss. Junior Nicholas DeGregorio (Mokena, Ill.-Lincoln-Way Central) added six stops, with one sack for seven yards. Seniors Emmett Zima (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South) and Mike Murphy (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) finished with five and four tackles, respectively, with Murphy registering two sacks. Fernando Chavez (Plainfield, Ill.-Joliet Catholic) and senior Zach Mitchell (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles East) recorded interceptions in the win.

Freshman Sage Shindler (Chicago, Ill.-Walter Payton) finished the day 19-for-35 for 170 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore Lucas Segobiano (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles North) was Shindler's top target for the second straight week, hauling in a team-high seven catches for 81 yards and a TD. Sophomore Charlie Hamilton (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart-Griffin) added five catches for 38 yards.

Junior Hamid Bullie (Chicago, Ill.-Loyola Academy) led the Titans ground game, rushing for 92 yards on 27 carries. Fellow junior Anthony Marre (Bloomingdale, Ill.-Glenbard North) added 51 yards on five carries, including a 40-yard long scamper.

A field goal by sophomore Andrew Stange (Lake Zurich, Ill.-Lake Zurich) capped a 10-play, 53-yard drive for the Titans with 1:26 to play in the opening quarter. Stange's 39-yard long field goal split the uprights to put IWU on top, 3-0.

The kick proved to be the only points of the half as the Illinois Wesleyan defense forced Augustana to punt on its first four drives. The Vikings tried to even the score in the second quarter, but missed both field goal attempts to leave the Titans' 3-0 lead intact at the half.

Another Stange field goal, this time a 30-yarder, doubled IWU's lead with 13 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

On Illinois Wesleyan's second possession of the fourth quarter, the Titans capitalized on an interception by Chavez. After the INT set the Green and White up at the Augie 25-yard line, Shindler connected with Segobiano for a quick three-yard reception before finding the sophomore wideout for a 22-yard TD to put Illinois Wesleyan in front, 12-0.

The Titans picked off the Vikings for the second straight possession as Mitchell snagged an Augie pass with 8:17 to go in the game.

Bullie and Marre took it from there, getting four first downs to run out the clock and send IWU home victorious, 12-0.

IWU enjoys a week off before hosting North Park University at Tucci Stadium Saturday, April 10. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m.
