Murphy Sets Sack Records in Football's Defeat of North Park

Murphy records 5.0 sacks, ups career total to 25.5

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Senior Mike Murphy (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) set the Illinois Wesleyan University football records for sacks in a single game and a career in the Titans 42-7 Senior Day victory over North Park University Saturday night, April 10, at Tucci Stadium.

Murphy finished with eight tackles, six for loss, and a program record five sacks. His five QB takedowns pushed his career total to 25.5, breaking Mike Stephens' record of 24.0 set back in 2006.

Illinois Wesleyan scored the games first 21 points, as freshman quarterback Sage Shindler (Chicago, Ill.-Walter Payton) connected with junior Wes Watson (Carmel, Ind.-Carmel) for a 24-yard strike, and sophomore Charlie Hamilton (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart-Griffin) for an 11-yard and a seven-yard touchdown to put the Titans in front 21-0.

The Vikings capped an 11-play, 69-yard drive with a 19-yard touchdown pass to cut the Titan lead to 21-7 at the break.

The Green and White piled it on in the third quarter, as Seth Albin (Midlothian, Ill.-Oak Forest) scampered for three touchdowns. After breaking loose for a 31-yard TD, Albin scored again on a 12-yard run. He finished off the game's scoring with a four-yard rushing touchdown following a 71-yard punt return from senior Zach Mitchell (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles East).

As a team, IWU finished with 388 total yards of offense, 186 through the air and 202 on the ground. The Titans held NPU to -8 yards rushing and 184 passing yards, and registered eight sacks on the day.

Schindler completed 17-of-25 passes for 160 yards, with three touchdowns. Hamilton was Schindler's top receiver, hauling in five catches for 61 yards and two touchdowns, all of which led the team. Sophomore Lucas Segobiano (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles North) and Logan Betz (Belleville, Ill.-Belleville West) each hauled in three passes for 26 and 19 yards, respectively.

The Titans used a platoon of backs in the running game, with Albin leading the way with 72 yards on seven carries, including three TDs. Junior Hamid Bullie (Chicago, Ill.-Loyola Academy) ran it 13 times for 71 yards, while Anthony Marre (Bloomingdale, Ill.-Glenbard North) finished with 49 yards on five attempts.

Junior Robert Neidballa (Winfield, Ill.-Wheaton North) tied Murphy for the team lead with eight tackles, adding 1.5 TFLs, and getting in on a half sack for seven yards. Mitchell added six stops, while Nicholas DeGregorio (Mokena, Ill.-Lincoln-Way Central) tallied five tackles, including half a sack.

In special teams, sophomore Andrew Stange (Lake Zurich, Ill.-Lake Zurich) went 6-for-6 in point after attempts, while freshman Matt Young (Bartlett, Ill.-Bartlett) punted three times with a long of 49. Mitchell led the return game, with a 71-yard punt return and a 24-yard kickoff return in the win.

Illinois Wesleyan wraps up its season with an exhibition game at Elmhurst University Friday, April 16.
