Men's Lacrosse Escapes Victorious at Aurora

Three Titans score first goals of season in win

AURORA, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team escaped with a 12-11 road win at Aurora University Wednesday, March 24. The win pushed IWU's record to 4-1, and 2-0 on the road. AU dipped to 2-4.

The Titans came out fast, registering two goals after two minutes of play in the first quarter. Junior Rick Smith (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) kicked it off for the Green and White with an early goal, followed by a goal from freshman Michael Campagna (Arlington Heights, Ill.-St. Viator) before the Spartans were able to put themselves on the board resulting in a 2-1 Titan lead. 

Freshman Bob Boone (Los Angeles, Calif.-Notre Dame) collected his first-career goal after a caused turnover from junior Malcolm Hedgepeth (Houston, Texas-The Kinkaid School) putting IWU on the attack, Boone made it 3-1 IWU. The Spartans answer after with a goal closing the lead back to one. 

Senior Jaren Vance (Milwaukee, Wis.-Wauwatosa East) answered back with his first goal of the season, starting a three-goal unanswered run. Boone capped off the first quarter with his second goal of the game widening the Titan lead 6-2.

AU managed to add two goals to the board to start the second quarter. Senior Jesse Prettner (Minneapolis, Minn.-Edina), collected his first goal of the season in addition to freshman Gage Black (Peoria, Ill.-Dunlap) who found the back of the net, and Smith who put the Titans up 9-4 to end the half. 

Boone scored his third goal of the game, breaking double digits for the Green and White, 10-4. The Spartans responded with a five-goal run in the third quarter, to cut the Titan lead to 10-9 after three quarters.

As time ticked down in the last 15, AU tied the game at 10. Sohompre Connor Kiichle (Vancouver, Wash.-Skyview) came in with the game deciding goal breaking the tie. IWU notched one more goal from Black expanding the lead by two, 12-10. The Spartans scored once more, but the Titans escaped victors, 12-11.

Illinois Wesleyan travels to Cincinnati, Ohio for a neutral site game against Southern Virginia. Game time is slated for 12 p.m. ET.
