Softball Swept by Elmhurst in CCIW Opener

Titans return to action Wednesday, March 24, against Wheaton

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University softball team was swept in its College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin opener Sunday, March 21, at the hands of Elmhurst University. IWU dropped game one 8-4, while Elmhurst notched a 5-4 walk-off victory in game two.

Illinois Wesleyan, which played its first home game in more than 670 days, celebrated the naming of Inspiration Field at Carol Willis Park with a pregame recognition.

Game One: Elmhurst 8, Illinois Wesleyan 4
Freshman Megan Fontanetta (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) and junior Hayley Earl (Washington, Ill.-Washington) went 3-for-4 at the plate to pace the Titans offensively. Both also scored a run, while Earl also notched a RBI. Sophomore Ambria May (Shorewood, Ill.-Joliet West) went 1-for-2 with two RBIs after entering as a pinch hitter.

Freshman Bailey Turner (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) suffered the loss, allowing three runs on four hits over 3.1 innings. Turner, sophomore Nina Mardjetko (Lemont, Ill.-Lemont), and junior Madie Monk (Manteno, Ill.-Manteno) each tallied two strikeouts apiece.

After taking a lead on a RBI single in the top of the second, the Bluejays upped their lead to 5-0 with three swings of the bat. A two-run homer was followed by a solo shot in the fourth, and Elmhurst tacked on another roundtripper in the fifth to go up by five.

After freshman Kristina Sherwin (Plainfield, Ill.-St. Francis) and sophomore Madison Moore (Verona, Wis.-Edgewood) reached on errors, Fontanetta singled up the middle to load the bases. Earl whipped a single to left to drive in one and senior Hannah Heraty (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville) was plunked to bring home another run. With the bases still loaded, May dug in as a pinch hitter and ripped a two-run single to center to pull IWU within one, 5-4, into the sixth.

Elmhurst responded with three runs in the top of the sixth to hold off Illinois Wesleyan's rally, 8-4.

Game Two: Illinois Wesleyan 4, Elmhurst 5
Junior Colleen Palczynski (Mt. Prospect, Ill.-Prospect) registered two of IWU's seven hits in the game, to go along with two RBIs and a run scored.

In the circle, sophomore Natalie Grubczak (Medinah, Ill.-Lake Park) struck out five and allowed four hits in a complete game effort.

Palczynski blasted a two-run homer in the second, and Earl launched a solo shot in the third to put IWU on top 3-1 through two and a half.

The Bluejays cut into IWU's lead with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the third, but Sherwin's RBI single gave the Titans a two-run cushion into the seventh.

A two-out rally by Elmhurst began with a walk and was followed by a single to set the table for EU's walk-off home run.

Illinois Wesleyan continues CCIW play at home Wednesday, March 24, against Wheaton College. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
