Softball Splits Doubleheader with Wheaton

Titans host Carthage Saturday, March 27, at 1 p.m.

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University softball team split a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin doubleheader against Wheaton College Wednesday, March 24, at Inspiration Field. The Titans bounced back from a 9-0 loss in game one, to top the Thunder 6-3 in game two.

Game One: Wheaton 9, Illinois Wesleyan 0 (5 inn.)
Sophomore Madison Moore (Verona, Wis.-Edgewood) recorded two of IWU's three hits in a 2-for-3 effort at the plate.

One inning proved to be the difference in game one, as Wheaton erupted for nine runs on six hits in the top of the fourth to take control, 9-0. The Thunder loaded the bases with one out and then singled in the game's first run, before doubling the lead with a bases loaded walk. A grand slam was followed by two singles to give Wheaton a 9-0 lead after 3.5 innings.

The Titans drew a pair of walks to put two on in the fifth, but a slicing fly ball was caught in foul territory to end the game after five innings.

Game Two: Illinois Wesleyan 6, Wheaton 3
The Titans tallied 11 hits to the Thunder's eight in game two. Four Titans picked up multiple hits, led by senior Lexy Trammell (Peoria, Ill.-Limestone), who went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a solo home run. Moore, junior Hayley Earl (Washington, Ill.-Washington), and senior Hannah Heraty (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville) registered two hits apiece. Moore added two runs and an RBI, while Heraty notched two RBI and Earl notched one.

Sophomore Natalie Grubczak (Medinah, Ill.-Lake Park) went all seven innings in the circle, striking out six. She also registered the first hit of her IWU career, as she went 1-for-2 with two walks at the plate.

Illinois Wesleyan scored in each of the first two innings, but Wheaton plated one in the first and two in the second to take a 3-2 edge into the third.

Titans thwarted a Thunder attempt to add to the Wheaton lead in the bottom of the third. With two on, Grubczak induced a fly out to right that saw the Titans double up the Thunder on a relay from right field. One pitch later, Grubczak got another fly out, this time to center, to escape the inning unscathed.

Trammell led the Green and White off with a single in the fourth, which was followed by a base knock from Moore. After freshman Megan Fontanetta's (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third, Heraty sent a single up the middle to give IWU a 4-3 advantage.

Leading off the Titans once again, Trammell belted a solo shot to center to push the IWU lead to two, 5-3.

IWU closed out the scoring with Trammell's solo home run in the sixth and a run in the seventh to wrap up the 6-3 victory.

Illinois Wesleyan is back in action Saturday, March 27, as the Titans host Carthage College for a CCIW doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
