Softball Silenced by No. 22 Trine, No. 10 Transylvania

Grubczak struck out 12 in IWU debut in game one

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Quiet bats doomed the Illinois Wesleyan University softball team in a pair of games at the Pioneer Classic Saturday, March 20. Illinois Wesleyan began the day with a 1-0 loss to No. 22 Trine University, before coming up short against No. 10 Transylvania 1-0. The losses dropped IWU's record to 2-2 on the season.

Game One: No. 22 Trine 1, Illinois Wesleyan 0
Making her official IWU debut, sophomore Natalie Grubczak (Medinah, Ill.-Lake Park) went all seven innings in the circle, allowing just one run on four hits. She struckout 12, three looking, the most by a Titan in their debut since Molly McCready fanned 13 against Montclair State March 9, 2014.

A pitcher's dual saw the game's lone run scored on a RBI single in the top of the first. The Thunder capitalized on a pair of walks, as Trine singled with runners on second and third. Grubczak responded with a strikeout to strand two and hold Trine to a 1-0 lead.

In the sixth, freshman Bailey Turner (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community West) drew a two-out walk, after two acrobatic defensive plays by Trine retired IWU's first two batters. Freshman Megan Fontanetta (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) kept the inning going with a single through the left side, which slipped past the left fielder and put runners at second and third, but a strikeout thwarted the Titans' threat.

Junior Hayley Earl (Washington, Ill.-Washington) walked and scooted into second on a sacrifice bunt, but a game-ending groundout stranded Earl and gave the Thunder the 1-0 win.

Game Two: Illinois Wesleyan 0, No. 10 Transylvania 1
Junior Madie Monk (Manteno, Ill.-Manteno) went four innings, allowing one run, in her second start of the season. Sophomore Nina Mardjetko (Lemont, Ill.-Lemont) tossed two scoreless innings in relief, allowing just one hit and striking out one.

Illinois Wesleyan's best scoring chance game in the top of the second. Senior Toni Tortorella (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South) drew a leadoff walk, and junior Colleen Palczynski (Mt. Prospect, Ill.-Prospect) singled with two outs to put runners on first and second. IWU's scoring chance ended, as a strikeout brought Transy back to the plate.

Transylvania responded with a two-out RBI single, plating the game's lone run.

With the Titans trailing 1-0 and down to their final out, senior Hannah Heraty (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville) singled through the left side, but a fly out kept Illinois Wesleyan off the board.

Illinois Wesleyan has a quick turnaround, as the Titans begin College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play tomorrow as host to Elmhurst University. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 3 p.m. at IWU's Inspiration Field.
