Baseball Blanks Greenville to Finish of Series Sweep

Jacob Cyrus launches first career home run

O'FALLON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team completed the series sweep of Greenville University Tuesday afternoon, March 2, with an 11-0 run-rule victory at Family Sports Park in O'Fallon, Ill. Moving to 3-0 on the season, the Titans are off to their best start since winning four straight to start the 2018 season.

For the third consecutive game Illinois Wesleyan registered double-digit hits, as the Titans' 11 runs came on 12 hits. Juniors Dominic DiLello (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart Griffin), Jack Schneider (Naperville, Ill.-Benet Academy),  Collin Elvers (Hamel, Ill.-Edwardsville), and sophomore Ethan Burgh (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Prospect) all notched two hits apiece, while DiLello and Elvers also added two RBIs each.

Burgh finished the day 2-for-3 with three runs scored and a pair of walks. Freshman Jacob Cyrus (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard South) went 1-for-2 at the plate with a solo home run.

On the mound, the Titans used a by-committee approach. Junior Evan Hill (Gurnee, Ill.-Warren Township) earned the start and tossed the first three innings, allowing one hit and strike out two. Junior Jacob Duffy (Pontiac, Ill.-Pontiac), and seniors Joe Prestamer (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East), Dan Trudeau (Mokena, Ill.-Mount Carmel), and Matt Blaney (Tinley Park, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) pitched an inning each to close it out.

IWU took control from the onset as Elvers' RBI single put the Green and White up 1-0 in the first.

The Titans added three runs in each of the next two frames. In the second, a pair of errors made way for three runs to put the score at 4-0, IWU.

Cyrus' solo shot to left opened the scoring in the third and was followed by a two-run double by DiLello.

Illinois Wesleyan expanded its seven-run lead to 11-0 in the seventh. After a leadoff walk, freshman Will Kafer (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal West) singled and DiLello walked to load the bases for junior Cole Greer (Springfield, Ill.-Pleasant Plains). A sacrifice fly by Greer pushed the Titan lead to eight. A hit by pitch, along with a pair of walks, and a RBI single by freshman Dino Biggers (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville Central) finished off the win for the Titans.

IWU remains on the road for a three-game set with seventh-ranked Washington University in St. Louis Saturday-Sunday, March 6-7. The series gets underway with a doubleheader Saturday at noon.
