Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Late Rally Falls Short in IWU's Setback to Southwestern

Harris ties single-game saves record with 22 stops

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team could not hold off Southwestern University Friday night, March 19, inside Tucci Stadium. The game was tied going into the fourth quarter, but the Pirates outlasted the Titans 11-10. Senior Will Harris (Bloomington, Minn.-Holy Angels) tied the program record with a career-high 22 saves.

The loss was IWU's first of the season, dropping Illinois Wesleyan's record to 3-1. Southwestern improved to 4-2.

Sophomore Carson Kiichle (Vancouver, Wash.-Skyview) led the Titans with five points, scoring two goals and assisting on three others. Junior Rick Smith (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln Way East), sophomore Connor Kiichle (Vancouver, Wash.-Skyview), and freshman Gage Black (Peoria, Ill.-Dunlap) added two goals apiece. Connor Kiichle also added two assists and Smith tallied one.

Southwestern struck first, but Illinois Wesleyan responded with three goals over a seven-minute span. Smith evened the score at 1-1 on as Carson Kiichle found him behind the defense. Then, Carson Kiichle scored off a pass from Connor Kiichle to put IWU in front, 2-1.

Carson Kiichle found the back of the net again with 4:21 to play in the opening quarter. After making a save, Harris flew down field and connected with Carson Kiichle for the goal.

The Kiichle boys teamed up once again in the second period as Carson's over-the-shoulder pass set Connor up for the goal from the edge of the crease.

IWU's 4-0 run was answered with six SU goals to give the Pirates a 7-4 advantage.

Smith cut the deficit to two, 7-5, with 1:32 to go. After a huge stop by Harris and the IWU defense, Connor Kiichle pulled the Titans within one at the half.

Illinois Wesleyan reclaimed the lead with two quick goals in the first two minutes of the second half, but Southwestern net the equalizer to leave things even into the final stanza.

The Pirates went up 9-8 with a goal less than a minute into the fourth quarter, but junior Griffin DeMilt's (Toledo, Ohio-Ottawa Hills) knotted the score at nine all minutes later.

With SU leading 11-9, IWU's rally came up a short. Black's man-up goal pulled the Titans within one, but a last second tying attempt came up empty.

Illinois Wesleyan returns to action Wednesday, March 24, at Aurora University. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
