Men's Lacrosse Remains Unbeaten with 16-14 Triumph at Rhodes

Titans moved to 3-0 on the season

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team came out on top in a back-and-forth affair at Rhodes College Sunday afternoon, March 14. The Titans scored four goals over the final 10 minutes to come away with a 16-14 triumph over the Lynx at Crain Field.

With the win, Illinois Wesleyan remained undefeated on the year at 3-0. Meanwhile, Rhodes dropped to 0-2 on the season.

Charles Hildestad (Carlock, Ill.-St. Viator) led the Titans offensively with four goals. Griffin DeMilt (Toledo, Ohio-Ottawa Hills), Jaxon Hendrickson (British Columbia, Canada-Westtown), Daniel Dickerson (Wheaton, Ill.-St. Francis College Prep), Gage Black (Peoria, Ill.-Dunlap), and Connor Kiichle (Vancouver, Wash.-Skyview) tallied two goals apiece, with Rick Smith (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln Way East) adding one goal and a team-best three assists. Michael Campagna's (Arlington Heights, Ill.-St. Viator) goal rounded out IWU's scoring.

In goal, Will Harris (Bloomington, Minn.-Holy Angels) registered 15 saves and Ryan Payne (Mercer Island, Wash.-Mercer Island) recorded a team-high three caused turnovers.

Senior Max Bousky (Peoria, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame) picked up a team-best six ground balls, while Dickerson added four. Bousky also went 14-for-27 in faceoffs, with Zac Taylor (Brighton, Mich.-Brighton) going 3-for-6 at the x.

Illinois Wesleyan took a 9-6 lead into halftime, but Rhodes scored five third-quarter goals to even the score at 11 all.

Black broke the tie with a goal, his seventh of the season, with 11:15 to put the Titans up one, but the Lynx scored 30 seconds later to knot things at 12.

Bousky won the ensuing faceoff and Dickerson found Hildestad for the go-ahead goal to put IWU in front 13-12 with 10:34 to play.

Each team added goals over the next five minutes, leading the score at 14-13, IWU with just over five minutes remaining.

A man-up goal from Hildestad was followed by one from Kiichle with 2:42 left on the clock to give the Titans a 16-13 advantage. Rhodes pulled within two with 1:14 to go, but Illinois Wesleyan held off the Lynx for a 16-14 win.

IWU returns to action Friday, March 19, when the Titans play host to Southwestern. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. under the lights at Tucci Stadium.
