Women's Hoops Cruises Past Cardinals

Five Titans made their collegiate debuts

NAPERVILLE, Ill. - Illinois Wesleyan University's women's basketball team cruised past North Central College, 77-52, Saturday afternoon, Feb. 6, at Gregory Arena. IWU saw 12 players score as five freshmen made their collegiate debuts.

Senior Kendall Sosa (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) paced the Titans with 16 points, four assists, four steals, three rebounds, and a block in a well-balanced game. Junior Brooke Lansford (Leawood, Kan.-Blue Valley West) and senior Samantha Munroe (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles East) added 12 points apiece. Lansford led the team with five assists, and tied senior Riley Brovelli (Oglesby, Ill.-LaSalle-Peru) for the team-lead with seven rebounds.

Freshmen Emily Kleffman (Tinley Park, Ill.-Tinley Park), Kathleen Stanley (Leawood, Kan.-Shawnee Mission East), Emma Kornak (Geneva, Ill.-Geneva), Launi Chanthaboury (St, Charles, Ill.-St, Charles North), and Taylor Tarver (Oswego, Ill.-Oswego) made their collegiate debuts, with Kleffman scoring six points off the bench.

As a team, the Titans continued their strong offensive start to the season, shooting 44.6 percent (29-for-65) from the field, and 8-for-18 (44.4 percent) from beyond the arc. IWU's defense smothered NCC, as the Cardinals converted just 25.4 percent (17-of-67) of their shot attempts, including 4-of-24 three-point tries.

Illinois Wesleyan forced 18 turnovers, converting the North Central miscues into 21 points, and held a 38-20 edge in points in the paint.

The Titans scored the first seven points of the game, including a Munroe three-pointer with 7:18 to go in the opening frame, and never looked back.

After taking a 20-6 lead into the second quarter, IWU stretched its lead to 15 at halftime as Lansford was fouled on a three-point attempt at the buzzer. She knocked down all three free throws to put Illinois Wesleyan in front 38-23 at the midpoint.

The second half was much of the same, as the Titans saw their lead grow to 31 on a triple by Stanley with 6:36 remaining in the contest, before running away with the 77-52 victory.

Illinois Wesleyan is back in action Tuesday night, Feb. 9, as the Titans travel to Decatur, Ill. for a rematch with Millikin University. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
