Sosa's Record-Breaking Night Leads IWU to Win Over No. 13 Millikin

Sosa broke IWU's 41-year old scoring record

DECATUR, Ill. - Senior Kendall Sosa's (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) record-breaking 47-point performance led the Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team to an 81-72 comeback victory over 13th-ranked Millikin University Tuesday night, Feb. 9.

Sosa broke the women's single-game scoring record set by Lila Wagner Jan. 5, 1980, and tied Greg Yess for the most points in a game by a Titan ever.

The Bloomington, Ill. native finished the night 13-for-29 from the field, including three triples, and went a perfect 18-for-18 at the free throw line. Her record-setting stat line also included five steals, four rebounds, and two assists.

Junior Brooke Lansford (Leawood, Kan.-Blue Valley West) and senior Samantha Munroe (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles East) added 11 and 10 points, respectively. Munroe also grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds for the first double-double of her career.

As a team, the Titans shot 41.9 percent from the field while holding the Big Blue to a 30.3 clip. IWU's shooting advantage stretched to the long line, where the Green and White hit six triples to MU's four. The Big Blue went 22-for-24 at the free throw line, while the Titans finished 23-for-30.

Illinois Wesleyan held a 45-44 edge in rebounding. IWU also led in fastbreak points (15-8) and points in the paint (34-30).

Millikin scored the first bucket of the game, but Illinois Wesleyan responded with 10 unanswered points to take a 10-2 lead midway through the first quarter. IWU maintained its eight-point lead after the opening period, taking a 16-8 advantage into the second.

The Big Blue used back-to-back triples to trim the Titans' lead one, before the two teams played to a 28-28 tie at the break.

The third quarter remained tight until Millikin closed the period on a 9-2 run to take a 51-45 edge into the final stanza.

Fouls piled up for the Titans in the fourth, allowing the Big Blue to get out to an 11-point lead with 6:30 left on the clock. Unfortunately for Millikin, it was plenty of time for Sosa to lead an Illinois Wesleyan comeback.

Sosa scored 15 points, and Lansford added a jumper, over a five minute span to even the game at 64 all.

The Big Blue had a chance for the game-winner, but Brovelli blocked Jordan Hildebrand's jumper to send the game to overtime.

The extra period got underway with a Sosa layup just two seconds in. After a defensive stop for the Titans, Sosa hit Lansford for a triple to give IWU a 69-64 advantage. Illinois Wesleyan increased its lead to as many as eight, before Sosa's 46th and 47th points put a bow on the 81-72 Titan victory.

IWU remains on the road with its third straight road game Saturday, Feb. 13, at North Park University. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
