BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team fell to Millikin University Thursday night, Feb. 4 at the Shirk Center. Despite a strong first half, the Titans were defeated 90-82 in a fast-paced affair.
As a team, the Titans finished 24-of-52 from the field (46.2 percent) and 12-of-22 (54.6 percent) from three. Despite IWU's efficiency, Millikin went 37-for-82 (45.1 percent) from the floor and 7-of-22 from deep (31.8 percent), using 30 additional shot attempts to outlast Illinois Wesleyan.
Senior Kendall Sosa (Bloomington, Ill. - Normal Community) led all scorers with 32 points, tied for 10th-most in a single game in school history. Junior
Brooke Lansford (Leawood, Kan. - Blue Valley West) had 21 points on 4-of-5 shooting from deep and senior
Samantha Munroe (St. Charles, Ill. - St. Charles East) added 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting from three.
Senior Riley Brovelli (Oglseby, Ill.-LaSalle-Peru) grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds and dished out a team-best five assists.
For the Big Blue, freshman Elyce Knudsen led the team with 23 points. Sophomore Bailey Coffman had 15 points and senior Jordan Hildebrand chipped in 13 points.
IWU started the game strong on a 5-0 run and led by as many as seven points in the first half. However, the Big Blue hit three triples in the final two and a half minutes to take a 41-36 lead into the break.
Illinois Wesleyan pulled within five late in the third quarter, but could not overcome the halftime deficit, eventually falling in its season opener, 90-82.
IWU will travel to North Central College for its next contest Saturday, Feb. 6. Tip off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
