Women's Hoops Upended by North Central

Titans led by as many as 12

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team saw its win streak halted at three as the Titans fell to North Central College 66-62 inside the Shirk Center Tuesday night, Feb. 23. With the loss the Titans fell to 3-2 on the season, while the Cardinals improved to 2-8 on the year.

North Central took its first lead of the game with just under five minutes to play on a three-pointer by Rebekah Foley. NCC bumped its lead to four as it capped the 7-0 run with a layup before senior Kendall Sosa (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) sunk a three-pointer to pull the Titans within two, 61-59.

North Central quickly extended its lead back to four, and despite IWU getting within three, that was as close as it would get.

Sosa led the Titans with 23 points on 8-of-15 shooting, including 4-for-7 from three-point range, while senior Anna Lowis (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart-Griffin) added a career-high 14 points. Senior Riley Brovelli (Oglesby, Ill.-LaSalle-Peru) finished with six points, a career-high eight assists, five steals, and four rebounds.

North Central, which shot 43.3 percent from the floor and 36.0 percent from three, was led by Foley's team-high 23 points. The Green and White shot 40.7 percent from the floor, 27.3 percent from beyond the arc, and 61.5 percent from the free throw line. IWU held a 17-4 lead in fastbreak points, 15 of which came in the first half, while NCC held an 11-3 upperhand in second-chance points.

Illinois Wesleyan jumped out to an 8-3 lead as Sosa answered a NCC triple with one of her own, but North Central battled back to a 14-14 tie with 1:05 to go in the opening period. A series of offensive rebounds led to a Samantha Munroe (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles East) three-ball and gave the Titans a 17-15 edge after one quarter.

In the second, IWU used a 10-0 run to build a double-digit cushion, 27-15, over the first two minutes of the frame. The Cardinals once again clawed their way back, cutting the Titan lead to five four minutes later.

Illinois Wesleyan stretched its lead to nine, 39-30, at the half thanks to a pair of layups by Lowis  and a swipe and score by Sosa.

The Titans look to get back on track Thursday, Feb. 25, at North Park. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
