Free Throws Spurn Women's Hoops in Loss at North Park

Titans fell to 3-3 on the season

CHICAGO - Free throws in the final seconds spurned the Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team in a 65-63 defeat at North Park University Thursday, Feb. 25, in Chicago. The Titans claimed a one-point lead with 33 seconds to go on a  jumper by senior Kendall Sosa (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community), but the Vikings hit three free throws in the final eight seconds to send IWU home with a two-point loss.

Illinois Wesleyan dropped to 3-3 on the year with the setback, while North Park upped its record to 8-3.

Sosa led all scorers with 31 points on 9-of-16 shooting, including a trio of three-pointers. She also recorded seven steals and four assists. Junior Brooke Lansford (Leawood, Kan.-Blue Valley West) also finished in double digits, tallying 16 points to go along with five steals and four assists. Senior Riley Brovelli (Oglesby, Ill.-LaSalle-Peru) finished with a team-high seven rebounds.

As a team, IWU shot just 33.9 percent from the floor, 38.9 from three-point range, and 14-for-26 at the free throw line. NPU finished 25-for-54 from the floor, good for a 46.3 clip, but was just 3-of-17 from distance. The Vikings went 12-for-17 from the charity stripe, including 6-for-8 in the fourth quarter.

The Titans held a 29-13 edge in points off turnovers, as IWU recorded 17 steals on 23 NPU miscues. Fastbreak points were 13-6 in favor of the Vikings.
