A career day by freshman Lauren Huber (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard East) was not enough for the Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team as it fell to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in overtime, 69-64, on the first day of the Midwest Challenge at the Shirk Center Saturday, Nov. 27.

Women’s Basketball Rolls Red Devils for 50-Point Win

Titans score program-record 39 points in first quarter

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team got back on track in a big way Wednesday night, Dec. 1, at the Shirk Center. The Titans (2-4) overpowered Eureka College, 91-41, in a game that saw IWU set the program record for points in a quarter. The Red Devils dipped to 2-3 with the loss.

Illinois Wesleyan put together an impressive opening 10 minutes, as the Green and White shot 14-for-20 from the floor, 3-of-5 from three-point distance, and 8-for-8 from the charity stripe to take hold, 39-10. IWU made the game's first nine points without missing a shot, while turnovers kept EC from an attempt.

A pair of Eureka timeouts did little to slow Illinois Wesleyan, as freshman Kate Palmer (Geneva, Ill.-Geneva) hit senior Catie Eck (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart-Griffin) for a three-pointer on a kickback to stretch IWU's lead to 30-4 with 3:55 to go in the period.

Junior Kelly Carlson (Western Springs, Ill.-Lyons Township), Eck, junior Hannah Smith (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East), and senior Brooke Lansford (Leawood, Kan.-Blue Valley West) added buckets in the final few minutes to push the Green and White ahead, 39-10. The Titans' 39 points broke the previous program record of 37 set twice - Jan. 23, 2019 vs. North Park and Feb. 8, 2017 vs. North Park.

IWU used its early lead to cruise to the 50-point victory and snap its three-game losing skid.

Eck led all scorers with 14 points, while freshman Lauren Huber (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard East) finished one rebound shy with 12 points and nine caroms. Junior Katelyn Heller (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard West) and Palmer added eight points apiece, with freshman Mallory Powers (Amboy, Ill.-Amboy) and Carlson tacking on seven each.

IWU finished 34-for-78 from the field (43.6 percent), making a living in the paint, where the Titans scored 50 of their 91 points. Illinois Wesleyan was also an impressive 17-for-21 from the charity stripe. Eureka finished with a field goal percentage of 26 (13-of-50). The Red Devils went 3-for-26 beyond the arc.

The Green and White scored 48 points off 37 Eureka turnovers. IWU also held the upper hand in fast break points, 30-12, and bench points, 47-10.

Illinois Wesleyan wraps up its homestand Saturday, Dec. 4, with its first College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin game of the season. IWU will host Carroll University inside the Shirk Center, with tipoff scheduled for 5 p.m. The game will be the middle of a jam-packed day inside the Shirk Center, as the IWU track and field team kicks the season off with the Titan Opener, while the IWU men's basketball team battles Carroll at 7 p.m.
