Hot Offense Leads Women's Hoops Past Pioneers

Five Titans finish in double figures

BLOOMINGTON, ILL. -  A hot start and a barrage of three-pointers lifted the Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team to a 75-62 victory over Carroll University Saturday evening, Dec. 4, in its College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin opener. The Titans bumped their record to 1-0 in the CCIW and 3-4 overall, while the Pioneers dropped to 5-1, 0-1 in the CCIW with the loss.

Four-first quarter three pointers by freshman Mallory Powers (Amboy, Ill.-Amboy) fueled the Green and White in the early going as IWU jumped out to a 23-5 lead. The Pioneers put together six straight points, but Illinois Wesleyan remained firmly in the lead, 23-11.

Carroll chipped away at the IWU advantage in the second quarter, pulling within four, 33-29. A pair of free throws by senior Catie Eck (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart-Griffin) kicked off a 6-0 spurt for the Green and White. Junior Katelyn Heller (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard West) hit a pull-up jumper from the elbow, and Eck closed the half with a swipe and score to put IWU ahead 39-29 at the break.

The start of the second half proved to be as strong as the first stanza for the Titans, as freshman Lauren Huber (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard East) muscled her way for a layup on a nifty pass from senior Brooke Lansford (Leawood, Kan.-Blue Valley West) right out of the gate.

A Lansford triple off a handoff from Huber upped the IWU advantage to 46-29, and a Huber put-back propelled the Titans ahead 52-35 at the media timeout with 4:20 to go in the quarter.

Freshman Kate Palmer (Geneva, Ill.-Geneva) connected on a three-ball to stretch the lead to 20, 55-35, with 3:58 remaining in the third. The Pioneers pushed back though, as Carroll hit a three with seven seconds left in the third to trim IWU's advantage to 61-45 ahead of the final period.

The Pioneers pulled back within single digits in the fourth quarter, but Lansford came through in the clutch for the Titans, scoring eight of her 13 points over the final 10 minutes. Eck closed out the game with a monster block and rebound as the Green and White handed the Pioneers their first loss of the season, 75-62.

Illinois Wesleyan benefited from an incredibly balanced offensive effort with five Titans scoring in double figures. Powers led with 16 points, while senior Lansford finished with 13 points and five assists. Huber finished with a 12 point, 10 rebound double-double, while Heller and Palmer each chipped in 10 points. Eck recorded a game-high five assists and three steals.

Next up, the Titans hit the road for a CCIW matchup with Wheaton on Saturday, Dec. 11. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
