Men’s Hoops Cruise Past Chicago

Titans remain undefeated at 6-0

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Outside shooting fueled the second-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University men's basketball team to an 83-50 non-conference win over the University of Chicago Wednesday night, Dec. 1, inside the Shirk Center. With the win, IWU remained undefeated at 6-0 on the year, while Chicago dropped to 4-3.

A tenacious defensive start for the Titans, saw the Green and White score the game's first 11 points, with six coming courtesy of junior Luke Yoder (Normal, Ill.-Central Catholic)

IWU held UC scoreless for the first 5:21 of the contest, before jumping out to a 23-7 advantage with 8:36 left in the half. Sophomore Ryan Sroka (Lake in the Hills, Ill.-Huntley) hit a three, and junior Lucas Heflen (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles North) made a tough layup to give IWU a 15-point cushion.

Yoder dropped a pass off to senior Matthew Leritz (St. Louis, Mo.-St. Louis University HS) to extend the IWU lead to 21, 32-11, with 2:48 left until the break. A triple by Yoder and a jumper by senior Cory Noe (Mahomet, Ill.-Mahomet Seymour) sent the teams to the half, with IWU in control, 39-15.

Riding the first-half lead, the Green and White extended its lead to as many as 37 in the second stanza. Freshman Harrison Wilmsen (Des Peres, Mo.-St. Louis Priory) sank a layup on a pass from junior Landon Wolfe (Effingham, Ill.-Effingham), before completing the and-one at the free throw line. Wolfe then hit a pair of FTs, followed by a three-ball on an assist from sophomore Pryce Punkay (Champaign, Ill.-Champaign Central) as Illinois Wesleyan ran away victorious, 83-50.

Noe paced the Titans with 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting, including a pair of three-balls, while Yoder diced up the Chicago defense for 17 points. Yoder converted 7-of-10 shots, including two three-pointers, while also adding five rebounds and four assists. Sroka rounded out IWU's double-digit scorers with 11 points, seven rebounds, and two steals.

Leritz grabbed a game-high nine boards, while junior Cody Mitchell (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles East) tallied eight points and eight rebounds.

As a team, the Titans shot a healthy 53.4 percent from the floor (31-of-58), highlighted by an 11-of-22 showing from distance. IWU also went 10-for-13 at the charity stripe, where Chicago went 1-for-3. The Maroons finished 22-for-64 from the field (34.4 percent), and just 5-for-30 (16.7 percent) from beyond the arc.

IWU mounted a 42-30 advantage in rebounds, and held a 9-0 edge in fast break points. UC turned nine offensive rebounds into an 11-6 lead in second chance points, and also posted 34 bench points to Illinois Wesleyan's 25.
