Slow Start Plagues Titans in Loss to No. 18 UW-Whitewater

Huber led IWU with 12 points and eight rebounds

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team struggled to find an offensive rhythm in a 75-43 defeat to No. 18 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Saturday evening, Nov. 20. The loss dropped the Titans to 1-2 on the season, while the Warhawks soared to 5-0.

Freshman Lauren Huber (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard East) led IWU with 12 points and eight rebounds off the bench. Senior Catie Eck (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart-Griffin) added nine points, while senior Brooke Lansford (Leawood, Kan.-Blue Valley West) tallied eight points. Sophomore Emily Kleffman (Tinley Park, Ill.-Tinley Park) tied Huber for the team lead with eight rebounds, while junior Kelly Carlson (Western Springs, Ill.-Lyons Township) grabbed seven.

The Green and White could not find its footing offensively, as IWU shot 28.3 percent (17-of-60) from the field and 9.5 percent (2-of-21) from beyond the arc. UWW finished the game 28-for-70 from the floor, including 6-of-23 from distance.

The Titans turned the ball over 25 times, while forcing 19 Warhawk miscues. UWW held a 36-7 edge in points off turnovers, a 40 to 22 advantage in points in the paint, and a 21-12 lead in second chance points. Despite holding a slim advantage in rebounding at halftime, IWU was outrebounded 49-40 for the contest.

Illinois Wesleyan rebounded from a slow start to close the opening frame on a 7-3 run. Freshman Kate Palmer (Geneva, Ill.-Geneva) and Eck hit layups and Huber converted an and-one to cut the deficit to 22-7 after 10 minutes of play.

The Titans carried momentum into the second quarter, where the Green and White scored the period's first eight points. After a pair of free throws by Eck, Huber hit a pull-up on an assist from Lansford. Senior Kaia Bowen (Rantoul, Ill.-St. Thomas More) slipped a pass to Eck for a reverse layup off a backdoor cut, and Lansford sank a floater to pull IWU within seven, 22-15, at the media timeout.

UW-Whitewater pushed its lead back to double digits, pulling ahead by as many as 13, but a bucket by Huber trimmed the Warhawk advantage to 28-17 at halftime.

Momentum swung back in favor of UWW in the third quarter, as the Warhawks used back-to-back three-pointers to jump the score to 34-17. A Huber and-one got the Titans within 13, 36-23, with 4:37 to go in the frame, but Whitewater rode its early lead to hand IWU the 75-43 setback.

Following the Thanksgiving break, Illinois Wesleyan will host the Midwest Challenge Saturday-Sunday, Nov. 27-28, inside the Shirk Center. The Titans will take on Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov 27, with DePauw University and Washington University in St. Louis set to battle at 1 p.m.
