Women’s Basketball’s Second Half Lead Slips Away in Loss to Rose-Hulman

Titans will play WashU tomorrow, Nov. 28, at 1 p.m. in the consolation game

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - A career day by freshman Lauren Huber (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard East) was not enough for the Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team as it fell to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in overtime, 69-64, on the first day of the Midwest Challenge at the Shirk Center Saturday, Nov. 27.

Freshman Mallory Powers (Amboy, Ill.-Amboy) knocked down a triple with 3:41 to play to give the Titans (1-3) a 57-54 lead. Rose-Hulman (2-2) responded with a layup on its ensuing possession, and later added a three-ball to take a 59-57 edge with 2:19 to go in regulation.

Huber grabbed an offensive rebound and sank a fade away put-back to tie the score at 59 all with 50 seconds remaining to force overtime.

In the extra period, Rose-Hulman scored the first six points to take a 65-59 advantage with 1:52 left on the clock. Huber hit a free throw and later added a jumper from the middle of the paint, but it was not enough as Illinois Wesleyan fell 67-64.

Huber led the Titans with a career-high 31 points on 9-of-21 shooting, including 13-of-17 shooting at the free throw line. Her 31 points are the most by an IWU freshman since Traci Butler dropped 32 at North Central Feb. 27, 1993. Also finishing in double figures was Powers, who added 11 points off the bench. Senior Brooke Lansford (Leawood, Kan.-Blue Valley West) was credited with five assists.

Huber, Powers, and senior Kaia Bowen (Rantoul, Ill.-St. Thomas More) tied for the team lead with seven rebounds each. Huber also tallied a game-high five steals, while freshman Kate Palmer (Geneva, Ill.-Geneva) added four swipes.

Overall, Illinois Wesleyan shot just 27 percent from the floor (27-of-74) and 13.8 percent from distance (4-of-29). IWU finished 20-for-30 at the charity stripe, while RHIT went 15-for-17 in free throw attempts. Rose-Hulman hit 25-of-60 shots (41.7 percent) and 4-of-12 triples (33.3 percent).

The Fightin' Engineers held a 52-41 advantage on the glass, and recorded eight blocks to two by the Titans. IWU held a 16-3 edge in steals. The Green and White forced 26 RHIT turnovers, while committing just 13 itself.

The Titans will take on Washington University in St. Louis in tomorrow's Midwest Challenge consolation final. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. inside the Shirk Center.
