All-Around Effort Leads Women’s Basketball Past Capital

Four Titans scored in double-figures

COLUMBUS, Ohio - A balanced effort led the Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team to its first win of the season Saturday, Nov. 13, at Capital University. The Titans saw four players score in double figures, as the Green and White used a strong second half to overcome the Comets (1-1), 75-67. With the win, IWU evened its record to 1-1 overall.

Seniors Brooke Lansford (Leawood, Kan.-Blue Valley West) and Catie Eck (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart-Griffin) and freshmen Mallory Powers (Amboy, Ill.-Amboy) and Lauren Huber (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard East) all hit double-digits in points. Lansford paved the way with a team-high 19 points, while she also facilitated well with a team-high five assists. Powers posted 13 points, eight rebounds, and three steals. Eck and Huber added 12 and 10 points, respectively.

The Comets soared out to a 20-10 lead in the first quarter, but the Titans turned things around in the second period. Eck got the Green and White going with an assist to junior Kelly Carlson (Western Springs, Ill.-Lyons Township). She then knocked down a three and dished to fellow senior Kaia Bowen (Rantoul, Ill.-St. Thomas More) for another IWU bucket to cut the deficit in half with 7:48 left to go in the half.

Illinois Wesleyan's freshman trio of Huber, Powers, and Kate Palmer (Geneva, Ill.-Geneva) combined for a quick 6-0 Titan run over a 45-second span to give IWU its first lead of the afternoon, 30-29.

Coming out of the half tied at 31, the Green and White carried over its momentum from the second quarter.

A pull-up jumper from Lansford and a bucket by Palmer gave Illinois Wesleyan a seven-point cushion with 2:59 left in the period. Powers added a jump shot of her own, but a Capital layup kept IWU's lead at seven, 54-47, into the final stanza.

The Comets trimmed the Titan advantage to one, 62-61, with three minutes to play, but Carlson kicked to Powers for a triple to bump the Illinois Wesleyan lead back to four. The three-pointer proved to be a dagger for Capital as Lansford closed out the victory from the free throw line to send IWU home victorious, 75-67.

Illinois Wesleyan returns to action next weekend, Nov. 20, with a home game against the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. inside the Shirk Center.
