Men’s Hoops Downs Hope to Advance to Sikma Hall of Fame Invitational Championship

Titans will play No. 17 UW-Oshkosh tomorrow, Nov. 13, at 6 p.m.

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The fourth-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University men's basketball team topped Hope College, 87-74, Friday night, Nov. 12, inside the Shirk Center to advance to the championship game of the inaugural Sikma Hall of Fame Invitational. The Titans moved to 2-0 on the season with the victory, while the Flying Dutchmen dropped to 0-1. IWU will face No. 17 UW-Oshkosh in the tournament's championship game tomorrow night, Nov. 13, at 6 p.m.

Junior Cody Mitchell (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles) and senior Cory Noe (Mahomet, Ill.-Mahomet-Seymour) turned in a pair of career performances to fuel IWU to the win. Mitchell picked up the first double-double of his career with a career-high 29 points on 12-of-17 shooting, including a 4-of-5 performance from beyond the arc. Mitchell completed the double-double with 10 rebounds. Noe notched his second consecutive 20-point performance with 26 points on 9-of-13 shooting. 

Senior Peter Lambesis (Mt. Prospect, Ill.-St. Viator) also finished in double figures, with 18 points. 

Illinois Wesleyan shot an impressive 56.7 percent for the game, converting 34-of-60 shots. IWU's efficiency was especially evident in the paint, where the Green and White totaled 50 points. Hope connected on 36.2 percent of its shots, going 25-of-69. The Flying Dutchmen converted 19-of-25 free throws, while IWU went 13-for-17 at the stripe. 

Hope held a 20-6 lead in points off turnovers, and a 16-12 advantage in second chance points. The Flying Dutchmen used 19 offensive rebounds to edge the Titans on the glass, 38-37, while Illinois Wesleyan led the assist count, 13-9.

Early three-pointers from Mitchell propelled the Titans to an 8-4 lead two minutes into the game. 

The Green and White quickly expanded its lead to double digits with an 8-0 run. Buckets by Noe and junior Lucas Heflen (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles North), along with four points from Lambesis put IWU up 16-6 with 14:32 to go in the opening half. 

IWU maintained a comfortable cushion from that point on, to take a 41-27 lead into the break.

In the second half, Illinois Wesleyan maintained the lead en route to an 87-74 victory. 

IWU will tangle with No. 17 UW-Oshkosh tomorrow night, Nov. 13, at 6 p.m. in the tournament's championship game. Following the conclusion of the third-place game between Hope and Saint John's, the Titans will recognize its 15 Academic All-Americans and present Matthew Leritz with his First Team plaque.
