Women’s Volleyball Sees Season Come to an End in NCAA Tournament

Titans finish season with 19-13 record

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's volleyball team saw its season come to an end in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament Thursday afternoon, Nov. 11. The Titans (19-13) battled to the end, but ultimately fell in straight sets to 15th-ranked University of Northwestern-St. Paul by set scores of 25-20, 25-15, and 32-30.

A slow start plagued the Titans in the opening set, as the Eagles soared out to a 21-10 lead. After a kill from junior Dana Kiszkowski (Schaumburg, Ill.-Schaumburg), sophomore Faith Washko (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart-Griffin) aced the serve and senior Jessica McCall (Wayne, Ill.-Wheaton St. Francis) followed with a pair of kills to cut the deficit to 21-14.

McCall's last kill brought about a UNW timeout, but McCall and junior Evy Makris (Orland Park, Ill.-Sandburg) combined for a block to force another timeout by the Eagles. With Northwestern sitting at match point, 24-19, Makris hammered a kill of her own, but the IWU comeback fell short, 25-20.

Set two saw the teams trade points back and forth before UNW pulled away, 22-11. Senior Courtney McAuliffe's (Lemont, Ill.-Lemont) kill was followed by a second-ball kill from freshman Abby Erdman (Aurora, Ill.-Metea Valley). McCall capped the run with a kill, but an IWU miscue gave Northwestern the set, 25-15.

Northwestern's serving kept the Titans off-balance early on in the third, as the Eagles used a few aces to take a 5-1 lead. The Green and White battled back behind a kill from Corey and three straight by McAuliffe to pull within one, 7-6.

Fueled by aces from McCall, the Titans took control. Cory and McAuliffe combined for a block and sophomore Lily Summers (Plainfield, Ill.-Plainfield North) smashed a kill to put IWU in front, 12-7, as UNW called a timeout. Illinois Wesleyan extended its lead to as many as six, but Northwestern battled back to even the score at 24 all.

From there, the Titans and Eagles traded points back and forth before UNW edged IWU, 32-30, to end the match in three sets.

McAuliffe led the Titans with 10 kills, while Kiszkowski notched seven on a .333 hitting percentage. McCall added eight kills as well as 12 digs and a trio of aces.

Porada totaled 14 assists and seven digs, with Corey contributing a team-high 18 assists. Washko led the Green and White with 19 digs.

As a team, IWU hit .151 to UNW's .250. The Eagles built up advantages in digs (58-49), kills (46-40), aces (7-6), and assists (44-37). Each team was credited with six blocks.

Illinois Wesleyan concluded its season with a 19-13 overall record and won the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin regular season and tournament titles. The Green and White's season-ending loss marked the final game in the careers of McCall, McAuliffe, Corey, Makenna Jacoby, Amber Juarez, and Riley Cross
