Men’s Soccer Tops Wheaton in Overtime Thriller

Titans pick up first conference win

WHEATON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's soccer team found success over Wheaton College in a 3-2 overtime victory Saturday, Oct. 9. The Titans moved to 2-6-1 (1-1 CCIW) while Wheaton sits at 6-3-1 (1-2-1 CCIW).

IWU had an offensive edge over the Thunder in the first 45 as they outshot Wheaton 8-5 (4-1 SOG). Freshman goalkeeper Ethan Fineman (Highland Park, Ill.-Highland Park) in his first career-start, made one save during the first half. The Titans kept the pressure in the attacking third, but after 45 minutes of play both teams headed into the second half tied 0-0.

In a second half full of excitement, senior Donovan Malone (Houston, Texas- St. Pius X) scored his second goal of the year to put the Titans up 1-0. Through a quick transition play, starting from Fineman's goal kick, senior Zack Kokes (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville Central) took control of the ball to find Malone running on the back end of it as he placed it behind the Thunder's goalkeeper.

Only four and a half minutes later, after Malone's goal, the Titans were given a corner kick. Sophomore Gavin Smith (Seattle, Wash.-Eastside Preparatory School) received the corner only to send another cross into the box. Senior Trevor Martin (San Diego, Calif.-St. Augustine) put his head on the ball from Smith's cross, beating his defender and the Thunder's goalkeeper. The Titans take a 2-0 lead with around 30 minutes left.

The Green and White held a dangerous two-goal lead before Wheaton received its first penalty kick of the night. At the 75 minute mark Wheaton stepped up to the penalty spot to close the gap 2-1. IWU was still up by one with around six minutes remaining in the game as Wheaton was given its second penalty kick, tying the game 2-2 and pushing the match into overtime.

Junior Dane Hoare (Chicago, Ill.-Von Steuben) stepped up for the Green and White with his golden goal just five minutes into the first overtime. Hoare picked up his second goal of this year and in his career both being game winning goals. Hoare helped the Titans pick up its first CCIW win with a 3-2 victory over the Thunder.

The Titans are back in action Wednesday, Oct. 13 for a 7 p.m. kick off with North Central College at Neis Field.
