Women’s Volleyball Clips Cardinals for Third Straight Win

Corey notches 12-kill, 30-assist, 19-dig triple-double

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Fueled by the play of its veterans, the Illinois Wesleyan University women's volleyball team took down North Central College in four sets Wednesday night, Oct. 6, inside the Shirk Center. With the win, the Titans won their third straight match and upped their record to 10-9 overall (3-1 CCIW). NCC dipped to 6-5 on the year and 2-2 in league play.

After dropping a tight opening set by a 25-23 tally, Illinois Wesleyan bounced back with three straight wins to secure the four-set College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin victory.

North Central led 18-17 late in the second set before the senior duo of Courtney McAuliffe (Lemont, Ill.-Lemont) and Madi Corey (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) came up huge for IWU. McAuliffe evened the score with a kill and Corey followed with an ace before a block by McAuliffe put Illinois Wesleyan up 20-18. Junior Dana Kiszkowski (Schaumburg, Ill.-Schaumburg) notched a pair of kills and partnered with McAuliffe on a block to put the score at 24-21. Senior Makenna Jacoby (Shorewood, Ill. - Minooka Community) finished things off from there, slamming a Corey set for the kill to even the match at one all.

In the third set, IWU rode a hot start to a 24-13 advantage. After a seven-point rally from NCC, Jacoby once again came through with a kill to propel the Green and White to a 25-20 win.

The fourth set saw the score tied 13 times, with the lead exchanged on four occasions. With IWU trailing 23-22, McAuliffe and senior Jessica McCall (Wayne, Ill.-Wheaton North) produced back-to-back kills to flip the script and put IWU up, 24-23. With the score locked at 26-26, a NCC error gave IWU a 27-26 edge. McCall finished off the match with a kill to wrap up the four-set win with a 28-26 set victory.

McAuliffe was dominant for the Titans, as she recorded 14 kills on a .333 hitting percentage, while also adding nine blocks, three digs, and an assist. Also finishing with double-digit kills was Corey (12) and Kiszkowski (10). Corey completed a triple-double with 19 digs and a team-best 30 assists in the match. Freshman Ava Porada (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) added 24 assists and eight digs to go along with two aces.

Sophomore Faith Washko (Springfield, Ill. - Sacred Heart-Griffin) totaled a team-high 20 digs. Junior Grace Sanders (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) also produced double-digit digs with 11.

The Titans hit .157 as a team, while the Cardinals hit at a .112 clip. IWU held the upper hand in kills (60-45), blocks (11-4), aces (7-6), and digs (87-81).

Illinois Wesleyan takes a break from CCIW play this weekend, Oct. 9, as the Titans take part in the WashU Invite in St. Louis, Mo. There, the Green and White will square off with No. 9 UW-Whitewater and 23rd-ranked WashU at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
