BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's volleyball team wrapped up tournament play with a split Saturday, Oct. 23, at the Holiday Inn Express Classic III inside the Shirk Center. The Titans (16-12, 6-1 CCIW) toppled Alma College in three sets, before falling to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Pointers in straight sets.
The Titans beat the Scots (1-17, 0-6 MIAA) by set scores of 25-14, 25-11, and 25-15. IWU ran out of steam against the 21st-ranked UWSP (23-6, 3-3 WIAC), falling 25-20, 25-22, and 25-13.
After the conclusion of the Holiday Inn Express Classic III, seniors
Jessica McCall (Wayne, Ill.-Wheaton St. Francis) and
Courtney McAuliffe (Lemont, Ill.-Lemont) were named to the all-tournament team to recognize the individuals outstanding performances this weekend.
Illinois Wesleyan dispatched Alma comfortably in straight sets to begin the day. The Titans jumped out to an 11-5 lead early to force an Alma timeout, but the break in action did little to swing momentum. IWU pushed its lead to 13, before senior Dana Kiszkowski (Schaumburg, Ill.-Schaumburg) tipped a kill over the Alma block for a 25-14 Titan win.
The second set was much of the same, as Illinois Wesleyan opened up a 12-4 advantage McCall's kill from the back row. The Titans' went up by as many as 11 before running away with the set, 25-11.
Set three was much tighter, as the Scots held the upper hand early, 7-5. From there Titans used a seven-point run to take control 11-7. With IWU in front 15-8, Alma put together a run of its own but sophomore Taylor Babec (Joliet, Ill.-Plainfield Central) tooled a block to end the run with Illinois Wesleyan's lead at five, 16-11. The Green and White went on to take the set 25-15, completing the clean sweep.
Senior Madi Corey (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) put together a strong performance, totaling 12 kills on 19 attempts for a .579 attacking percentage. She added 13 assists, eight digs, and an ace in a stat-stuffing showing.
Freshman Ava Porada (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) posted a match-high 22 assists, with sophomore
Faith Washko (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart-Griffin) tallying five. Washko added 15 digs and four aces, both of which were team-highs.
Kiszkowski, Babec, and McAuliffe recorded two blocks apiece. Kiszkowski added five kills on a .400 clip, while Babec finished with five and McAuliffe tallied six. McCall went for seven kills, nine digs, and a block. Sophomore
Lily Summers (Plainfield, Ill.-Plainfield North) recorded six kills and three digs.
Illinois Wesleyan doubled up Alma in kills, 44 to 22, and built up a 47-33 advantage in digs. IWU finished with a team hitting percentage of .330, while Alma came in at .103. The Titans also notched nine service aces, while the Scots did not record any.
The Titans ran out of steam in their second match of the day, despite holding a lead in each of the three sets. IWU could not overcome the strong UWSP block, as the Green and White hit .071 for the match and trailed the Pointers in kills, 43 to 28. Meanwhile, UW-Stevens Point hit .235 for the match and tallied 10 blocks to IWU's four.
McAuliffe led the Titans with nine kills on a .389 hitting percentage, while also adding two digs and a pair of blocks. Kiszkowki added five kills.
Corey and Porada tallied 13 and 11 assists, respectively. Washko paced IWU with 14 digs and two aces.
Illinois Wesleyan closes out the regular season Wednesday night, Oct. 27, with a Senior Night showdown with College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin preseason favorite Carthage College. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
