Steffens’ Hat Trick Propels Women’s Soccer Past Pioneers

Second career hat trick for Steffens

WAUKESHA, Wis. - Senior Caelyn Steffens (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community) net a hat trick to propel the Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team past Carroll University Saturday afternoon, Oct. 23, in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin action. Steffens scored twice in the first half and once in the second to help IWU move to 7-7-1 overall and 5-1-0 in the CCIW. Carroll's record sank to 10-4-2 on the season and 2-3-1 in league play.

Illinois Wesleyan grabbed momentum early as junior Lauren Shanks (Bloomington, Ill.-Central Catholic) played a ball across the six for an easy tap-in by Steffens. The goal, which was Steffens' team-leading eighth of the season, put the Titans in front, 1-nil, less than eight minutes into the match.

The Green and White doubled its lead 20 minutes later, as Steffens put away another tapper. This time, it was a header from senior Izzy Mitra (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community) that found Steffens' boot on the far post for the insurance goal.

Freshman keeper Kayla Borg (McHenry, Ill.-Cary Grove) made two first-half saves, before senior Maria Fields (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) entered between the posts for the second 45.

Carroll broke the shutout with a converted penalty kick in the 76th minute, to cut Illinois Wesleyan's lead in half, 2-1.

The Titans bounced right back however, as Anny Mitra (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community) played a ball over the top of the Pioneer back line. Mitra's pass played right to the feet of Steffens in the middle of the 18, where the Bloomington, Ill. native beat the Carroll keeper and a defender with a quick touch. The goal pushed IWU's lead to 3-1 and secured Steffens her second career hat trick.

Fields finished with five second-half saves, as Carroll fired off 12 shots in the second period.

Overall, the Pioneers manufactured eight corner kicks to the Titans' three. Carroll also held a 15-11 (9-6 SOG) advantage in shots.

CCIW play rolls on Wednesday, Oct. 27, when the Green and White play host to Millikin University at Neis Field. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
