Women’s Soccer Bests Big Blue 3-1

Titans are tied for first in the CCIW with Wheaton College

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team defeated Millikin University 3-1 in its Breast Cancer Awareness match Wednesday night, Oct. 27 at Neis Field. The Titans advanced to 8-7-1 overall and 6-1 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. Millikin dropped to 3-4 in the conference and 8-7 overall.

IWU is now tied for first in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin standings with Wheaton College as both teams hold a 6-1 conference record heading into the final game of the regular season this Saturday.

The Titans offense was present in the first 45 as the Green and White outshot the Big Blue 16-3 and 9-1 shots on frame. In the defending third, senior goalkeeper Maria Fields (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln Way East) made one save during the first half.

Senior Caelyn Steffens (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community) opened the scoring for the Green and White at the 15 minute mark. Junior Lauren Shanks (Bloomington, Ill.-Central Catholic) sent a ball into the Big Blue's box and Steffens got her head on the back end of it to take the 1-0 lead. Shanks notched her team-leading sixth assist of the year and Steffens tops the pack with 11 goals.

IWU forced the Millikin keeper to make eight saves in the first half ending the period 1-0 in favor of the Titans.

The Titans kept the offensive pressure alive to start the second half as senior Izzy Mitra (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community) scored two goals within 43 seconds of each other. At the 51:40 mark junior Jenna Li (Haslett, Mich.-Lansing Christian School) slid Mitra the ball to put the Titans up 2-0. Just 43 second later, Mitra beat the Big Blue's defender to launch a ball in the upper-90 mesh widening the gap 3-0.

Around the 68-minute mark the Big Blue saw their best chance as forward Hannah Henson grabbed her own rebound to close the deficit, 3-1 the final score of the night.

In the second half alone the Titans outshot the Big Blue 16-4 and 9-3 shots on target. Freshman goalkeeper Kayla Borg (McHenry, Ill.-Cary Grove) grabbed the second half start where she recorded two saves. Mitra had a game-high seven shots with six on target and two resulting in Titan goals.

The Titans return to action this Saturday, Oct. 30 for its final regular season game against Carthage College at Neis Field for a 1 p.m. start. The game will be in support of the American Heart Association in honor of Titan forward Heather Dietrich's (Geneseo, Ill.-Geneseo) brother.
