Pediatric Cancer awareness weekend

10/21/2021 11:25:00 AM

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's volleyball team is gearing up to host its third and final Holiday Inn Express Classic of the season, Oct. 22-23. The Green and While will welcome the Alma College Scots (1-15), Augustana College (7-18, 1-5 CCIW), and No. 21 University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (20-6).

The Titans will tangle with College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin opponent Augustana Friday, Oct. 22 at 7:30 p.m. IWU will then battle Alma and No. 21 UW Stevens-Point Saturday, Oct. 23 at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.

For the tournament, the team will raise awareness for a cause near and dear to the Titans. Inspired by sophomore Taylor Babec (Joliet, Ill. - Plainfield Central), a childhood cancer survivor that needed 22 blood transfusions as she battled cancer as child, IWU wear yellow laces in honor of Pediatric Cancer awareness.

The Green and White own a slight 24-18 all-time series over the Vikings. Currently IWU is riding a five-match win streak against AC dating back to Oct. 7, 2016. These two teams last met last season, where the Titans pulled off a four-set victory. Augustana last topped the Titans Sept. 22, 2015 in a five-set thriller.

IWU and Alma will square off for the first time in 26 years when they meet on Saturday. These teams have met only twice all-time, with the Titans coming out victorious on both occasions. The Green and White defeated the Scots in straight sets Oct. 1, 1994 followed by a three-set victory Aug. 31, 1995.

No. 21 UW-Stevens Point has won the previous four matchups against the Green and White to own a 6-4 all-time series advantage over IWU. These two programs last met Oct. 11, 2019 that resulted in a Pointers sweep. Illinois Wesleyan last defeated UW-Stevens Point Sept. 9, 2006 in straight sets.

For the season, senior Courtney McAuliffe (Lemont, Ill. - Lemont) leads the IWU offense with 238 kills and 99 blocks. McAuliffe's 99 blocks is good for the most total blocks in NCAA Division III.

Senior Jessica McCall (Wayne, Ill. - Wheaton St. Francis) is second on the team in kills (168), digs (219), and is tied for second with 28 aces.

Sophomore Faith Washko (Springfield, Ill. - Sacred Heart-Griffin) is leading the defensive effort with her team-leading 235 digs.

The setting duo of senior Madi Corey (Frankfort, Ill. - Lincoln-Way East) and freshman Ava Porada (Frankfort, Ill. - Lincoln-Way East) have accumulated 879 assists for the season. Corey has notched 465, while Porada has accounted for 414.
