Women’s Soccer Defeated in Tight Battle with No. 3 WashU

Titans return to conference play Saturday, Oct. 23

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team battled third-ranked Washington University in St. Louis Wednesday night, Oct. 20, at Neis Field. The Titans fought the Bears tight, but ultimately fell, 1-nil.

Illinois Wesleyan withstood 11 shots by WashU before the Bears broke through for the game's only goal in the 43rd minute. WashU sent a ball into the 18 where Jessica Greven sent it into the back of the net.

Senior Maria Fields (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln Way East) made five saves in net in the first half, as WashU held a 12-3 edge over the first 45.

IWU nearly had the equalizer in the 55th minute. The Titans drew a free kick a few yards outside the box. Freshman Liza Matimore (Gurnee, Ill.-Warren Township) stepped to the ball and bent a kick around the wall and into the far upper 90, where WashU's keeper lifted the ball over the crossbar to keep the score at 1-0.

Around midway through the second period, WashU looked to double its lead, but a team save by Madison Fischer (Orland Park, Ill.- Carl Sandburg) on the goal line, and a stop by freshman goalkeeper Kayla Borg (McHenry, Ill.-Cary Grove) kept the Bears from increasing their advantage.

With time winding down and the Green and White pressing, senior Heather Dietrich (Geneseo, Ill.-Geneseo) saw her shot blocked in the 84th minute. IWU created another opportunity in the 86th, but junior Jenna Li's (Haslett, Mich.-Lansing Christian School) shot could not find the back of the net.

The Bears ran out the clock with a series of throw ins to hold off the Titans, 1-0.

Borg finished with one save, as the Green and White defense held the Bears to four shots in the second half. Illinois Wesleyan recorded three second-half shots and produced two corner kicks.

Dietrich recorded two shots, one on goal, while IWU's four other shots were spread evenly among Matimore, Li, junior Lauren Shanks (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington Central), and senior Erin Peck (Wheaton, Ill.-Wheaton St. Francis).

Illinois Wesleyan dips back into College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play Saturday, Oct. 22, when the Titans hit the road for the final time in the regular season. IWU will battle Carroll University at 1 p.m. in Waukesha, Wis.
