Seniors Seal Comeback Win for Women’s Soccer

Titans overcome 1-0 halftime deficit

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - A second-half comeback led the Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Augustana College on Senior Day at Neis Field Saturday, Oct. 16. The Titans overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit to even their record at 6-6-1 overall and 3-1 in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play. Meanwhile, Augie dipped to 7-6 on the year, 3-3 in the CCIW.

Despite IWU holding a 9-6 edge in shots in the first half, Augustana made the most of its opportunities as the Vikings grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute.

Trailing 1-nil coming out of halftime, Illinois Wesleyan wasted little time. Senior Erin Peck (Wheaton, Ill.-Wheaton St. Francis) found the back of the net for the second time in as many games to even the score at one just 1:55 into the second period.

Following a pair of huge saves from senior Maria Fields (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln Way East), senior Izzy Mitra (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community) found fellow senior Caelyn Steffens (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community) for the game-winner in the 64th minute.

Leading 2-1 the Titans defense held strong, limiting Augie to just two shots over the final 25 minutes en route to the CCIW victory.

Illinois Wesleyan takes a brief break from conference play for a midweek non-conference match against No. 3 WashU Wednesday night, Oct. 20. Game time is set for 5 p.m. at Neis Field and will serve as the first leg of a doubleheader with the IWU men's soccer team.
