Fulk Brings the Power as Softball Sweeps the Day in Shutout Fashion

Shelby Fulk homered twice, Brea Walker struck out career-high 15

TUCSON, Ariz. - The Illinois Wesleyan University softball team closed out its spring break trip with a pair of shutouts at the Tucson Invitational Games Wednesday, March 11. The Titans, who were ranked fourth nationally in the NFCA Top-25 earlier in the day, pushed their record to 9-1 on the year with wins over the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford and Baldwin Wallace University. IWU blanked Pitt-Bradford 6-0 in the early game before blanking Baldwin Wallace, 7-0, in the final game of the trip.

Game One: Illinois Wesleyan 6, Pitt-Bradford 0
A career day in the circle from senior Brea Walker (Gibson City, Ill.-GCMS) led the Titans to a win over Pitt-Bradford in game one. Walker went the distance, yielding just one hit, and striking out a career-high 15. Her 15 K's are tied for the sixth-most in program history.

Illinois Wesleyan registered eight hits spread among six players, with seniors Mia Massaro (Homer Glen, Ill.-Providence Catholic) and Sam Berghoff (Chicago, Ill.-Whitney Young) leading the way with two hits each.

With the game scoreless into the sixth, the Titans got their bats going, putting up six runs on six hits and three errors. A leadoff double by junior Hannah Heraty (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville) was followed up with an RBI triple from Berghoff. After senior Massaro's base hit scored Berghoff, senior Shelby Fulk (El Paso, Ill.-El Paso-Gridley) lifted a two-run bomb over the left field fence to give IWU a 4-0 advantage.

Following a Panthers pitching change, sophomore Hayley Earl (Washington, Ill.-Washington) pushed her hit streak to 11 games with a triple down the left field line. Freshman Nora Adams (Chesterfield, Mo.-Nerinx Hall) extended IWU's lead to five on a RBI groundout and senior Brittany Murphy (Canton, Ill.-Canton) capped the six-run frame with a run-scoring double.

Walker shutdown the Panthers from there, retiring six straight, to wrap up the 6-0 victory.

Game Two: Baldwin Wallace 0, Illinois Wesleyan 7
Illinois Wesleyan jumped out to 1-0 edge in the first inning. Massaro got things rolling with a one-out triple and Fulk brought her in on a RBI single.

Fulk added to the Titans lead in the fourth, belting her second homer of the day to leadoff the frame. Earl followed with a walk and junior Lexy Trammell (Peoria, Ill.-Limestone) doubled with two outs to push IWU's advantage to 3-0 into the fifth.

The Titans tacked on two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to push the final tally to 7-0.

Senior Ally Wiegand (Downs, Ill.-Downs-Tri-Valley) struck out 12 over seven innings in the circle, while allowing five hits. Offensively, IWU cranked out seven hits, with most of the damage being done at the top of the lineup. Massaro went 2-for-4 and Fulk finished 2-for-3, while Berghoff and Earl added hits as well.

Illinois Wesleyan takes a break from competition before returning to action at the Schutt Invitational, March 21-22, hosted by Washington University in St. Louis. There, IWU will play games against WashU and Wartburg beginning with a 1:15 p.m. first pitch against the Bears Saturday, March 21. The Titans will then face the Knights at 3:30 p.m. that afternoon before closing out the weekend Sunday, March 22.
