Men’s Hoops Unable to Keep Up With Augustana

IWU returns to action next Wednesday against Elmhurst College

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's basketball team was defeated by Augustana College in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin action 78-64, Saturday evening, Feb. 8, inside the Shirk Center. IWU saw its record drop to 14-7 overall and 8-4 in CCIW play, while Augustana upped its record to 16-6 with a 10-3 CCIW record.

Seniors Bernie Corderre (Flossmoor, Ill.-Homewood-Flossmoor HS) and Alex O'Neill (Peoria, Ill.-Peoria Christian HS) were honored before the game as part of Senior Night at Illinois Wesleyan.

The Titans were behind 41-39 at the half, but were outscored 10-0 by the Vikings in the first two minutes before taking a timeout. IWU cut the deficit to eight points late in the second half before Augustana pulled away with the victory.

For the game, freshman Luke Yoder (Normal, Ill.-Central Catholic HS) led all Titans with 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting and 5-of-7 from the free throw line to go along with six assists. Junior Doug Wallen (Champaign, Ill.-Champaign Central HS) and sophomore Pete Lambesis (Mt. Prospect, Ill.-St. Viator HS) added 10 points each to round out the double-figure scoring for IWU.

Illinois Wesleyan shot 39.3 percent (22-of-56) from the field and 11.1 percent (2-of-18) from three-point range, with a 66.7 percent rate (18-of-27) from the free throw line. Augustana finished the game shooting 48.1 percent (26-of-54) from the floor, 50 percent (10-of-20) from three, and 72.7 percent (16-of-22) from the charity stripe.

Both teams committed 17 turnovers and scored 18 bench points, while IWU held the advantage in points in the paint, 30-26, and Augie owned a 41-31 advantage in rebounding.

The Titans will be back at the Shirk Center for a bout versus eighth-ranked Elmhurst College, Wednesday, Feb. 12. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
