BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - A halftime deficit was too much to overcome as the Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team dropped its home opener against Capital University, 14-5, Friday afternoon, Feb. 28, at Tucci Stadium.
Five different players scored goals for the Titans, but the Crusaders used a 34-21 edge in shots to build up an early lead. IWU owned a 20-18 lead in ground balls, while Capital led in draw controls, 13-8. Junior Janaye Godfrey (Hillsboro, Ore.-Lincoln) finished with 11 saves, while freshman Rebecca Rymarcsuk (Lake Zurich, Ill.-Lake Zurich Senior) tallied four saves in relief.
Illinois Wesleyan got on the board first as junior Maggie Torres (Chicago, Ill.-Resurrection) found sophomore Landry Elliott (Milwaukee, Wis.-Nicolet) for a goal one minute into play.Â
The Crusaders responded, stealing the Titans' momentum, with eight straight goals to take an 8-1 edge into the break and never looked back.
Illinois Wesleyan returns to action tomorrow afternoon, Feb. 29, against Hope College. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m. and will serve as the second part of a double feature with the IWU men's lacrosse team.
