Women’s Soccer Falls at No. 18 Chicago

Peyton Howe scores first goal of the season

CHICAGO - The Illinois Wesleyan women's soccer team came up short 6-1 at No. 18 University of Chicago Saturday, Sept. 14 as both teams traded goals early on.

Chicago found the back of the net quickly in the 2nd minute, as the Maroons put in a header off a corner kick. The Titans equalized the score with a goal from junior Peyton Howe (Austin, Texas-James Bowie HS) in the 13th minute off a deflection, her first goal of the season.

The early scoring continued with another Chicago header in the 17th minute, and the Maroons added another goal for a 3-1 advantage in the 34th minute that carried into halftime. Two more scores for Chicago came in the 60th minute off another corner kick and one more a minute later for a 5-1 lead. Chicago also converted a penalty kick in the 90th minute for the final margin.

A potential goal for the Maroons in the 54th minute was waved off due to offsides. Both teams had a considerable amount of offsides, with Chicago committing six and IWU committing five. Chicago held the advantage in shots (25 to 4), shots on goal (12 to 1), and corners (6 to 2).

Sophomore Maria Fields (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-East Way HS) was heavily tested in her first career start as goalkeeper, saving six shots.

Up next for the Titans is a home non-conference match against Rose-Hulman, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. at Neis Field.
