Men’s Soccer Downed by Greenville Despite Opportunities

IWU outshot Greenville 20 to 8 with 9 shots on goal

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan men's soccer team was defeated by Greenville 2-1 on Saturday, Sept. 14, despite leading the stat sheet in all offensive categories.

After a scoreless first half, Greenville tallied goals in the 69th and 85th minutes before senior Orion Marty (Addison, Texas-Greenhill School) put it in the net from inside the box in the 86th minute for his second goal of the season.

IWU held the advantage in shots (20 to 8), shots on goal (9 to 4), and corners (8 to 2). Senior Doug Ballard (Solana Beach, Calif.-Canyon Crest Academy) led all Titans with five shots, tying a career high, including two on goal. Fellow senior Patrick Hickey (Des Plaines, Ill.-St. Viator HS) added four shots and a shot on goal.

The match featured a combined 30 fouls, with IWU committing 16 and Greenville just behind with 14. There were also seven yellow cards given, with the Titans drawing four yellow cards from Greenville while receiving three of their own.

Sophomore Brett Sprengel (Hoffman Estates, Ill.-Barrington HS) came in relief of senior Alex Ruckstaetter (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard West HS) in goal in the 74th minute for his first action of the season.

The Titans will compete in their next match against Principia at home for the "Lace Up For Pediatric Cancer" event. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. next Saturday, Sept. 21.
