BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's soccer team made a late push but ultimately came up short in a 2-1 setback against Washington University in St. Louis Tuesday night, Sept. 10, at Neis Field. The Titans cut their deficit in half late in the match but could not overcome the Bears' two-goal advantage.
WashU took the lead in the 24th minute, then extended its lead with another goal in the 49th to go up 2-0.
After several chances, IWU broke through in the 78th minute to cut the WashU lead in half. Senior
Patrick Hickey (Des Plaines, Ill.-St. Viator HS) flicked a reset ahead to sophomore
Donovan Malone (Houston, Texas-St. Pius X HS) who met the ball at the far post and tapped it in for his first goal of the season.
Malone led all Titans with four shots, with sophomore
Logan Servin (Milton, Wis.-Milton HS) and freshman
Dorian Lesiuk (Palatine, Ill.-Fremd HS) tallying three shots apiece. IWU led WashU 5-4 in corners and 7-4 in shots on goal for the game, but dropped to 2-3-0 on the year with the loss.
The Titans look to bounce back this weekend when they travel to Greenville, Ill. to take on Greenville University. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
