BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- Illinois Wesleyan senior
Will Rossi set a school record with nine goals as the Titans took a 27-4 win over Augustana in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin men's lacrosse tournament semifinals at Tucci Stadium on Wednesday, May 1.
Rossi's nine goals is also a CCIW postseason tourney record as the Titans won for the 11th straight time, improved to 15-1 and will host No. 2-seed Elmhurst at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 4. The Bluejays were 21-10 winners over North Central on Wednesday night. IWU downed Elmhurst, 29-20, on April 13 in the regular season.
Augustana's season ended with an 8-10 record.
IWU started with a 5-1 edge after one period and then outscored the Vikings, 9-0 in the second quarter and 9-1 in the third to put the game away.
In addition to Rossi, 13 other Titans scored in the game with three goals coming from
Ty Collins and two each from
Tanner Nelson,
Charles Hildestad, and
Nick Ceko. Rossi also had four assists in the game while
Rick Smith had three and
Patrick Murphy had two.
The Titans, who had a 69-40 lead in shots and a 42-20 advantage in shots on goal, had a 48-17 lead in ground balls with eight coming to
Max Bousky, seven to
J.C. Grabarek and six to
Daniel Dickerson.
Illinois Wesleyan had 25-of-34 faceoffs won and were successful on 22 of 24 clear attempts.
IWU starting goalkeeper
Benigno Houser had nine saves.
