WAUKESHA, Wis. -- Illinois Wesleyan junior first baseman
Garrett Shea tied a school record with three home runs in a game and the Titans banged out nine homers with 29 runs on 31 hits in a doubleheader sweep at Carroll University in Waukesha, Wis., on Saturday, April 6.
Illinois Wesleyan won by scores of 13-4 and 16-7 and is now 11-11 overall and 4-4 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin while Carroll is 8-13 this season and 0-5 against the conference.
Shea becomes the fifth Titan since 1996 to hit three home runs in a game, a feat last accomplished by catcher
Pat Mollo, also at Carroll University on April 9, 2017. The others have been Zach Scott (at North Park, April 17, 2011), George Stiglish (Gustavus Adolphus, 1998) and James Rinne (Elmhurst, 1997). Shea's seven runs batted in in the first game is tied for fourth most in an IWU game.
Junior designated hitter
Nick Figus had three hits with a home run and senior second baseman
Stephen Billington cracked a pair of homers as IWU had six long balls among their 16 hits in the opener.
Senior starter
Nick Brune (4-1) scattered six hits over eight innings, allowing two earned runs while striking out five.
Figus added three hits with a homer in game two and Shea also had three hits with a double in the second game. Freshmen
Evan Ranneklev and
Dom DiLello hit home runs in the nightcap. Catcher
Seth Palmby had three RBI and three of IWU's 15 hits.
Starter
Quinn Gudaitis (2-1) struck out 10 in five innings, allowing four runs on seven hits with five walks.
